DULUX TRADE Brings Ultimate Woodcare Colour Protection To Sheltered Housing

Dulux Trade woodcare products have been used in the external refurbishment of Hanover Court in Suffolk. Several coatings from the Dulux Trade Weathershield range were selected to preserve, protect and enhance the exterior woodwork on all four residential blocks of flats.

The supported housing complex is managed and maintained by Hanover Housing Association, and as part of its routine maintenance, it called upon the assistance of Dulux Trade and Dulux Trade Contract Partner, Seddon Property Services, to revamp all external woodwork, including fascias, soffits, doors and wooden panelling.

Andy Beecroft, Contracts Manager at Seddon Property Services, said: “The housing association presented a testing brief, mainly due to the location of the accommodation. Hanover Court is situated within a conservation area in Sudbury, Suffolk, and therefore, the need to preserve and safeguard the natural features of the area was paramount. Taking this into account, we worked with David Murgatroyd, the Dulux Trade Specifier Account Manager, to create a colour palette that matched the existing colours of the woodwork perfectly, and which also complemented the surrounding area.”

What’s more, Hanover Court backs on to the River Stour and the rear elevation is south–facing, meaning that the selected coatings needed to be moisture resistant and flexible in order to meet the demands of these environmental conditions and stop the wood from rotting.

David Murgatroyd comments: “Given the complex requirements of the project, it was important that the products we selected would help to improve and maintain the condition of the woodwork. With this in mind, we chose a combination of Weathershield Ultimate Opaque and Weathershield Aquatech Opaque products to deliver a durable, weatherproof finish.”

For the wooden cladding, facias and soffits, Dulux Trade Weathershield Ultimate Opaque provided the ideal balance between protecting and aesthetically enhancing the exposed features of Hanover Court. The high performance exterior coating, designed not to crack or flake, produces a water repellent satin finish, protecting exterior woodwork for up to ten years.

With more than 600 colours available in the Dulux Trade Weathershield Ultimate Opaque, David was able to suggest a variety of shades that were in keeping with the original colour of the woodwork.

“After careful consideration, we selected Deep Brunswick Green from the Dulux Trade Heritage collection, as the period colour matched the existing woodwork perfectly,” explains David.

To achieve a striking finish, as well as long lasting durability, Dulux Trade Weathershield Aquatech Opaque was applied in Dark Hickory for the focal features, including the doors and frames. The quick drying coating offers excellent resistance to peeling and flaking, as well as adhesion and colour retention, even in the harshest weather conditions.

Commenting on the project, Richard Bell, Technical Manager for Hanover Court, concludes: “Both staff and residents are really pleased with the finished result. By using the Dulux Trade Weathershield coatings, we have not only improved the appearance of the buildings, but have significantly extended the period between maintenance cycles, saving us time and money in the future.”
