FORBO FLOORING SYSTEM - NFU Mutual’s Investment In Design Pays Dividends

Flooring finishes from Forbo Flooring System’s Tessera carpet tiles and Surestep safety vinyl collections have been installed at the Bristol offices of NFU Mutual, contributing to a fresh new interior design scheme. Installed initially across just one floor of the waterfront building, the design proved so popular that it has now been extended to an additional level.

Sandra James, Senior Associate at King Sturge LLP was the Project Manager for the office fit out and specified the products as part of Forbo’s one-stop-shop procurement service, which enables clients to source all floor coverings required for a project from a single supplier. She said: “Specifying products from just one manufacturer streamlined the process and offered excellent value for money. We had a very good experience of working with our account manager Fleur Carson and Forbo Flooring.”

For the main flooring component, Sandra selected 2000m2 of Forbo’s Tessera Helix range. The high lustre metallic yarn used in this multi-height loop pile tile gives it a muted reflective quality, which was specified in this instance in the Copper colourway – a rich tone that lends warmth to the installation. Helix also has an understated linear design that delivers rich texture and visual appeal to large open floorspaces.

In the breakout and kitchen areas, 110m2 of Surestep Star in Raisin and 70m2 of Surestep Star in Pewter were installed to provide R10 slip resistance in these spillage-prone areas. Incorporating both aluminium oxide and carborundum chips into the wear layer, Surestep Star provides a tough, long lasting and easily maintained slip resistant flooring in a variety of attractive colourways. The cool grey of the Pewter shade and the soft Raisin tone are offset in this project by the warm tones and texture of the Tessera Helix carpet tiles. In addition, Surestep Star incorporates holographic chips, which lends the flooring a reflective quality that echoes the subtle metallic effect of the Tessera Helix tiles.

Installation was undertaken by flooring contractors Rudge Brothers and James, who were faced with the challenge of an unusually shaped building. Director Jim Heal said: “The building is wedge shaped with lots of curved walls, meaning we had a lot of hand cutting to do to ensure the flooring went down correctly. Fortunately, Forbo’s products are easy to work with and so the installation went well.”

Ben Truslove, Management Surveyor at NFU Mutual commented: “The finished flooring design is visually striking. The quality of the materials is excellent and we are very happy with the end result – so much so that the design concept has been extended throughout other areas of the building.”
