HVMS Secures +£2M Power Supply Enhancement Contract From Network
Rail
HVMS have been awarded a +£2M contract to design and construct the first package
of the Power Supply Enhancement (PSE) which is the largest southern region power
supply development for Network Rail since 2004.
This package includes 33kV, 11kV, Transformer Rectifier and DC Traction
substation installations as well significant design, civil and track works.
The PSE programme is vital to Network Rail in delivering the additional
electrical power and network stability required to enable the new longer trains
to run on the more frequent timetable.
The programme of works is planned for completion by the end of 2011.
The main package of works is across 3 sites:
1. Woldingham – Develop from a brown field site to a new 11kV/Traction
Substation
2. Eden – Upgrade an existing 11kV/Traction Substation to a 33kV/Traction
Substation
3. Lingfield – Upgrade a existing TP Hut site to an 11kV/Traction substation
1.Woldingham is a brown field site adjacent to the station which currently has
no local traction power infrastructure. This particular section of the rail
network was identified as an area requiring significant electrical
reinforcement.
HVMS are contracted to design, install and bring into service a new traction
substation at this site and works are well under way to clear the site and
install all ground work and foundations including an Under Track Crossing (UTX)
in preparation for the main substation works.
Once the ground works are complete HVMS will deliver and install a new 11kV
substation module, Transformer Rectifier Unit and a DC traction substation
module at site. Each unit will be commissioned, brought into service and
integrated into the Network Rail infrastructure providing additional network
stability.
In order to complete the transformation of this site from a brown field site to
a fully operational HV/TRU/Traction substation site, HVMS will divert an
existing 11kV feeder and associated pilot cable to provide the primary
substation power and will modify the conductor rail, introducing a track gap to
enable the connection of the traction power cables from the DC traction
substation to the modified conductor rail system.
As well as all of the civil and electrical works associated with the primary
equipment, HVMS will complete all associated SCADA, Telecomms and Signalling
works necessary to integrate the new installation into the existing Network Rail
infrastructure and handback a fully operational 11kV HV/TRU/Traction substation
to our client Network Rail.
2. Eden is an existing site which currently has an 11kV substation and
transformer rectifier unit feeding a DC traction substation however the
challenge here is to modernise the existing electrical infrastructure by first
replacing the 11kV substation for a new modular solution and then further
reinforce the electrical network by adding a new 33kV substation and associated
10MVA 33/11kV transformer, thus converting the site from an 11kV to 33kV
supplied system.
The enabling works at this site are significant as access for delivery of the
substation modules and associated 33/11kV transformer is via a farmer’s field
and due to the size and weight of each unit, (up to 20 tonnes on an 8 meters x 5
meters footprint), all equipment will be delivered and lifted into final
position utilising an articulated flat bed transporter and an 80 tonne crane.
To facilitate the delivery, contract lift of the substation modules and
associated 33/11kV transformer, a temporary road approximately 350 meters will
be installed from the entrance of the farm field to the final crane lift point
adjacent to the Eden construction site. Each module will be lifted into position
in a contract lift under the site management and supervision of HVMS.
However, prior to any substation equipment delivery and subsequent power systems
installation works taking place at the Eden site, HVMS will have completed a
significant amount of ground works including the installation of all substation
foundations and cable routes, a Geotech reinforced earth retaining wall which
will be back filled to accommodate the extension of the raised substation
platforms as well as a 12 way Under Track Crossing (UTX) for diversion of the
33kV feeder and pilot into the new primary substation module.
As well as all of the civil and electrical works associated with the primary
equipment, HVMS will complete all required SCADA, Telecomms and Signalling works
necessary to integrate the new installation into the existing infrastructure and
handback a fully operational 33kV HV/TRU/Traction substation to our client
Network Rail.
3. Lingfield is a site which currently has no traction power supply
infrastructure other than an existing DC Track Paralleling Hut (TP Hut). HVMS
will modify the existing TP Hut and convert it to a DC Traction substation by
installing additional DC switchgear and control equipment in the existing
module. A new 11kV substation module and Transformer Rectifier Unit will then be
installed and commissioned at site and HVMS will divert an existing Network Rail
11kV feeder and associated pilot cable into the primary substation module to
provide additional network capacity and direct power to the conductor rails via
the Transformer Rectifier Unit and newly converted DC Traction substation.
However, prior to any substation equipment delivery and subsequent power systems
installation works taking place at the Lingfield site, HVMS will have completed
a significant ground works similar to that at Eden site including the
installation of all substation foundations and cable routes, a Geotech
reinforced earth retaining wall which this time will hold the embankment in
place where it has been dug away to allow final located of the substation
platforms and modules installed at ground level. A 12 way Under Track Crossing (UTX)
will also be installed as part of these works to enable the diversion of the
11kV feeder and pilot into the new primary substation module.
As well as all of the civil and electrical works associated with the primary
equipment, HVMS will complete all required SCADA, Telecomms and Signalling works
necessary to integrate the new installation into the existing network rail
infrastructure and handback a fully operational and 11kV HV/TRU/Traction
substation to Network Rail.
These works play a vital part in providing the electrical network reinforcement
required to enable the new fleet of longer trains to run on this line on the
more frequent timetable.
