HVMS Joins The PV Solar Farm Revolution & Beats The FiT Clock
HVMS has successfully completed the installation of its first Photo Voltaic (PV)
Solar Farm on the Isle of Wight working directly for the land owner / developer.
The project, which wasn’t secured by HVMS until the last week in May 2011 was
completed and energised by the end of July 2011 which included a remarkable
final 10 days on site.
With feed-in tariff (FiT) incentives for mid/large solar installations set to be
reduced by the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) the race was on to
complete the installation before the end of July. Whilst many projects HVMS had
‘tracked’ were scrapped due to expected tariff changes the Isle of Wight PV Farm
opportunity was accelerated to secure the current rate of tariffs ahead of the
August deadline.
The HVMS scope of supply included:
> Planning and project management;
> Detailed electrical design including
discrimination/protection study;
> Supply and installation of 1000m of 33kV cable
including all terminations;
> Off-loading via crane HV/LV
switchgear/transformers;
> Supply and installation of 33kV/433V ONAN
transformer;
> Supply and installation of Main LV Switchboard;
> Supply and installation of 10No. sub distribution
panels;
> Supply and installation of LV tails between
transformer and Main LV Switchboard;
> Supply and installation of all outgoing LV cabling
between Main LV Switchboard and sub- boards;
> Liaison with client and host DNO (SSE);
> Carry out all on-site switching procedures;
> G59 Commissioning works and energisation of the
network;
Mark McGovern, Engineering Manager of HVMS commented "This is a real achievement
for HVMS and everyone involved in the project given the challenging program
deadlines. It is a great reward for the significant front end investment made by
HVMS in developing designs & programs on numerous potential schemes to see one
successfully come to fruition in such a short space of time.
We trust this experience will be the catalyst to secure similar opportunities
and have already seen this potential following recommendations from our client
Roy Barclay.”
Photovoltaic modules
A solar cell (also called photovoltaic cell or photoelectric cell) is an
electrical device that converts light energy into electricity by the
photovoltaic effect. Assemblies of cells are known as solar panels. The energy
generated from these solar modules is referred to as solar power and is an
example of solar energy.
Photovoltaic is the field of technology and research related to the practical
application of solar/ photovoltaic cells in producing electricity from light.
Cells are described as photovoltaic cells when the light source is not
necessarily sunlight. These are used for detecting light or other
electromagnetic radiation near the visible range.
Due to the low voltage of an individual solar cell (typically ca. 0.5V), several
cells are wired in series in the manufacture of a "laminate". The laminate is
assembled into a protective weatherproof enclosure, thus making a photovoltaic
module or solar panel. Modules may then be strung together into a photovoltaic
array and use an inverter to convert the DC power produced by the modules to AC.
The electricity generated can be either stored, used directly (island/standalone
plant) or in this case fed into the electricity grid powered via HV electrical
substations.
