LAYHER SCAFFOLDING & ROOFING SYSTEMS Help Deliver Prestigious
Refurbishment Objectives
Clear access, excellent weather protection and high quality appearance – the
scaffolding objectives for the roofing refurbishment undertaken at Melbourne
Hall in Derbyshire have been clear cut and fulfilled by the use of Layher
Allround® scaffolding and Keder roof systems.
The highly prestigious project has seen the work divided into two phases at
either side of the house. Key requirements defined by the status of the building
had to be met, not least the use of only minimum tie-ins to the brickwork. This
was achieved by using comprehensive kentledge in the form of water-filled IBC’s
located onto Layher steel decking at the first lift level in phase one, and one
lift higher during phase two. The latter has also included a cantilevered
section at the lower level to enable vehicles to be parked alongside the
building, unhindered by the scaffold design.
The project has focused on the refurbishment of both the roof structure and
guttering, and has been undertaken by building contractor Alan Staley.
“The roof makes comprehensive use of green Westmoreland slate, which had to be
removed and then either repaired or replaced during the project,” comments
Managing Director, Alan Staley. “It was vital during each phase, therefore, to
provide full access around the working area, and the minimum number of
components required by the Layher equipment, which has resulted in minimum
walkway obstruction, is thus very important.
“Layher Allround® scaffolding was built from ground level to support the
mono-pitched Keder roof structure from the company which, significantly, allowed
sufficient natural light into the area while providing excellent weather
protection,” he adds.
The scaffolding installation was completed by Allround Scaffolding Services
(Midlands) Ltd., whose Contracts Manager Joe Hassall, highlights key
characteristics of the Layher scaffolding design –
“Its lightweight construction clearly helps with installation and has allowed us
to make best use of our scaffolding teams,” he says. “Based on previous
experience of Layher systems, we selected the Allround® scaffolding and Keder
roof system for the Melbourne Hall project in the knowledge that any adaptations
would be easy. Additionally, if needed, sections of the Keder roof could be
rolled back very quickly for roof access – although, to date, this has not been
required. Perhaps most important of all, the wide bay design of the Layher
system creates an uncomplicated and very acceptable appearance, which is clearly
a major consideration with such an important location.”
The mono-pitch Layher Keder roof system at the site has created the required 18m
span for phase one with a similar installation also designed for phase two.
Importantly, this interfaces directly with the Layher 750 mm beams, which have
been installed at key points for added support. Additionally, where required,
scaffold bridges using the same beam system were also created, particularly over
the low level conservatory and adjoining roof areas. Layher stairtowers to
provide personnel access and loading towers for material location have also been
installed during both phases of the project.
“We are delighted to have been able to meet both design and supply requirements
for the project,” adds Layher UK Managing Director, Sean Pike, “and would
congratulate both Alan Staley and Allround Scaffolding Services for achieving
quality results that fully reflect the Royal heritage and standing of Melbourne
Hall.”
