SIKA SARNAFIL - How The Added Benefits Of Sarnafil Reflective &
Living ‘Cool’ Roofs Can Help Beat Summer Aircon Costs & UHIE
With rising average summer temperatures, many commercial buildings will not only
rely on costly and carbon-heavy air-conditioning to keep office space cool, but
also exacerbate the problem by contributing to urban heat levels and air
pollution.
That’s because constructions with dark-coloured roofs absorb rather than reflect
the heat from the sun, raising a building’s internal temperature. The cumulative
effect of heat gains in cities and built-up areas – aka, the urban heat island
effect (UHIE) – is increased thermal discomfort, reduced air quality and
increased risk of smog.
The answer is ‘cool roofs’, a familiar concept in the Mediterranean and
California, which leading roofing solutions specialist Sarnafil is now
pioneering in the UK. Having evolved from centuries-old white-washed exteriors
into sophisticated solar and green roof systems, today’s cool roofs are proven
to lower internal building temperatures and cut aircon bills, while also
combating UHIE.
With the UK climate getting hotter, and businesses and building owners under
increasing pressure to improve the environmental performance of their premises,
the cooling properties of Sarnafil’s White Solar Reflective membrane or green
roofing options provide additional benefits for those already considering a
solar or living roof as part of a refurbishment or new build project.
Sarnafil’s specially manufactured White SR membrane boasts the highest CIGS
solar reflectance factor on the market of 95 percent, meaning roofs fitted with
this product have unrivalled cooling effects. Coupled with a Solyndra solar
roofing system, which is capable of harvesting 360 degrees of sunlight, thanks
to its cylindrical solar modules, such a roof could also generate power and
income for the building.
Marrying its market-leading single ply membrane with biodiverse, extensive or
intensive green roof options, Sarnafil’s SarnaVert green roofs are an
increasingly popular choice among clients searching for sustainable solutions.
Living roofs can reduce aircon costs through the shading effects of plant cover,
and the cooling effect of transpiration and evaporation from plants and
substrate surfaces. Indeed, internal temperatures have been shown to be three to
four degrees centigrade lower under a green roof when outdoor temperatures are
between 25 and 30 degrees.
Commenting on Sarnafil’s cool roofs offering, head of technical, Phil Jarratt
says: “Our country’s climate is changing, with summer temperatures set to soar
in the coming years. So a cool roof is a prudent investment for the future,
whether for a new-build or refurbishment project – especially when coupled with
the latest solar or green roof technology. Though a cooling roof may not be top
of a client’s wish list at present, it’s a terrific plus-point to our
sustainable roofing options.”
