ALTRO Is All-Round Solution At Youth Centre

Altro has “ticked all the boxes” at the new South Molton Youth Centre in Devon, where a wide range of its flooring products has been fitted.

Opened in May 2011, the centre has already become a popular facility with young people in the area. The large sports hall is in constant use for football and basketball, which means a robust, safe playing surface is essential. This area has been fitted with Altro Mondosport TM Wood, a cushion-backed, sports-grade flooring with a natural timber appearance that complies with BS EN 14904.

Richard Harris, senior youth support worker, is delighted with the flooring choice. He said: “Youth centres get a lot of wear and tear - we get 40 to 50 young people here in each opening session - so any materials used in their construction must be practical, tough and easy to clean, as well as having great safety credentials. The Altro flooring is certainly ticking all those boxes.

“The floors have been subjected to shoe marks, but they clean up, no problem. Our sports hall looks great, too, very professional, and it’s providing a safe environment for a wide range of activities.”

Project designer Claire Hutson - working on behalf of NPS Property Consultant, Devon County Council’s joint venture property advisor - specified Altro flooring at the Centre. She said: “This project required flooring that was practical, attractive, cost-effective and easy to maintain. Altro’s strong product portfolio was the ideal choice.

“We have specified Altro Mondosport Wood before, for other sports areas, and it has always proved very successful; hard-wearing, safe and comfortable to play on.”

In the main lounge ‘chill-out’ area of the youth centre, the wood-effect theme has been continued with AltroSmooth EthosTM, a 2mm vinyl flooring designed to provide a hygienic, hard-wearing, yet attractive surface.

The centre’s kitchen has been fitted with Altro SupremaTM safety flooring. Ideal for areas where hygiene is paramount, the surface has a non-sparkly, modern look, while still offering superb cleanability and slip resistance.

The more decorative Altro MiricaTM safety flooring has been used in the toilets. This surface is perfect for high traffic areas and combines good looks with ease of cleaning.

Simon Yeo, managing director of Unicraft Flooring, which installed the Altro products, said: “The project went smoothly and the Altro products were very easy to install. Timing is always crucial on a new build, so this enabled us to finish the job on schedule.”
