CMS DANSKIN ACOUSTICS Creates Sound Environment At Ravensbourne

CMS Class 0 Acoustic Foam, available exclusively from the UK’s largest supplier of acoustic solutions, CMS Danskin Acoustics, has been installed at Ravensbourne’s award winning new Greenwich Peninsula campus to reduce high levels of reverberation as a result of the contemporary interior design.

Recently winning a prestigious RIBA London award, Ravenbourne’s interior space was designed by Foreign Office Architects to encourage interaction between disciplines incorporating open spaces, quiet corners, social spaces, prototyping hubs, broadcast studios and production suites. To create an edgy and contemporary environment, ceiling installers, MPG Group kept the ceilings throughout the institution raw and concrete soffits together with all the M&E services were left exposed.

Hard surfaces, such as concrete lack natural absorptive properties and combined with the archetypal educational environment which lacks soft furnishings, results in high levels of reverberation. Best practice dictates that new build further education establishments should meet BB93 acoustic regulations but to reduce reverberation to between 0.8 and one seconds for teaching areas, Ravensbourne required a flexible and cost effective acoustic solution.

Consequently, 3,400m² of 50mm CMS Class 0 Acoustic Foam was installed by subcontractors Excel (Portam) Ltd and MPG Group Ltd into ceiling mounted, open cell stainless steel metal trays beneath all the electric cables throughout the institution. A fire retardant modified polyurethane acoustic foam designed to meet stringent requirements of British Building Regulations, CMS Class 0 Acoustic Foam is easy to handle and install as it can be supplied in sheet or roll form. In this instance CMS Danskin Acoustics utilised in-house manufacturing facilities to supply the acoustic material pre-fabricated to the exact specification of the electric cable trays.

“CMS Danskin Acoustics were extremely flexible with delivery of the material to site and went above and beyond the normal level of customer service expected. Each and every delivery was in complete coordination with the construction programme to ensure there were no delays.”

A versatile specification, CMS Class 0 Acoustic Foam can be supplied with a wide range of facing and backing materials to suit the application or ease of installation including self-adhesive backing, melinex facing, 200gm woven glass cloth facing, S-V1 polymeric coating or SVG1 vinyl coated glass cloth facing. Designed to meet the stringent requirements of Building Regulations, CMS Class 0 Acoustic Foam is safe for use in public buildings as it is non-toxic and CFC and HCFC free.

Ravensbourne’s £70 million new campus is a purpose built state-of-the-art building situated on Penrose Way next to The O2 and that is now open to some 1,700 students. A university sector college innovating in digital media and design, Ravensbourne has a vocationally focussed portfolio of courses, spanning fashion, television and broadcasting, interactive product design, architecture and environment design and graphic design.
