SUSTAINABLE OPTIONS - 500 Year 'Plastic' Solution For Century Old Barn!

A 100 year old barn in the heart of North Dalton's conservation area, near Driffield, has been given a new lease of life thanks to 'plastic' doors produced and fitted by a Leeds recycling specialist.

Sustainable Options in Cross Green, Leeds, came to the rescue of farmer Rob Conner when he tracked them down on the internet.

The wooden doors on one of his 100 year old brick barns at the Centre House Farm in North Dalton, had to be replaced as part of a renovation programme.

But the practical farmer knew that he needed a better and more modern solution than 'wood'.

Rob, whose family has worked the farm since 1936, said: “The existing wooden doors on the building had been in place for a century and, being in a conservation area, we are required to maintain the barn in keeping with its original look.

“However, we knew that another set of wooden doors would not only be subject to the elements, but would also require considerable maintenance over the coming years, so we set out to look for an alternative.”

Rob found Sustainable Options on the internet at www.sustainableoptions.co.uk and sent out an SOS to their research and development team – could they make a set of 'wooden looking' plastic doors that wouldn't require much looking after?

“I am delighted to report that their R&D boys came up trumps, producing a wooden lookalike version but in plastic. Maintenance is virtually nil, they've been fitted and I am absolutely delighted with the result, so much so that we will be repairing some stable doors in the not too distant future using similar material.”

Sustainable Options Technical Project Manager, Mark Leah, said: “The barn doors we make vary in size. This one was 1270 x 2000mm and can be opened as one 'large door', or the top half can be unlocked and opened 'stable style'.

“It required a bit of innovative thinking but our research and development team rose to the challenge and, as well as producing the doors in recycled plastic, they also produced recycled frames to hang them on.

“When you consider that plastic is predicted to last five times longer than wood, we are anticipating that Rob's barn will have fallen down long before the maintenance free doors have fallen apart. I'm reckoning 500 years before they need re-hanging!” said Mark.

The doors are rot proof, rust proof, chemical proof and vandal proof - graffiti just wipes off them - which makes them perfect for dozens of environments.

Sustainable Options' is part of Barkston Plastics and its products are now used in a variety of ways including plastic fencing for heavily waterlogged environments – the Environment Agency is one of its customers – and even funky furniture.
