TIMBERPLAY - Richter Lead The Way With European Play Standards Guide

A new illustrative guide to European Standards EN1176 has just been published. Entitled ‘Playground Equipment. Safety in Europe’s playgrounds’ it offers a detailed ‘layman’s’ interpretation of the EN1176 standards. It has been authored by several key people with years of experience within the play industry including Harry Harbottle and Julian Richter both from Timberplay’s German partner, Richter Spielgeräte.

The guide gives a clear and practical overview of the essential requirements for providing playground equipment for safe public use. The authors explain the requirements for playground equipment set out in the EN1176 Standards series. The essential aspects of these Standards, together with those set out in EN1177 are presented and critically discussed. Original illustrations are used throughout to demonstrate the practical applications of the European Standards in ensuring the safety of children at play.

Harry and Julian were invited to participate because of their contribution to the play industry for many years, using their extensive knowledge to raise the profile of play. Harry , Dipl. CA, Dipl.Mgt., is a longstanding representative of ANEC within CEN/TC 136/SC 1 (ANEC is the European Association for the Coordination of Consumer Representation in Standardisation).

Julian has a degree in wood technology, is a member of the Working Committee of DIN NASport “Playground equipment” for more than 30 years, member of CEN/TC 136/SC1 since 1990, chairman of this subcommittee from 1996 to 2002, consultant for all questions regarding playground equipment such as “play value, design, safety and maintenance”, manufacturer of playground equipment, mostly from wood.

Commenting upon the guide Paul Collings, MD at Timberplay says, “The European Standards on play can be quite complicated so it is really useful to have it explained in detail with drawings to demonstrate these within this new guide. The fact that both Julian and Harry from our German partners, Richter have been asked to contribute is testament to their understanding and in-depth knowledge of play.
