UNIBOX & Tom Dixon Collaborate For Royal Academy Of Arts

Unibox, market leaders in retail and exhibition display solutions, have collaborated once again with renowned British designer, Tom Dixon, and his interior design practice, the Design Research Studio. Combining their experience in commercial interior design and dramatic displays, the partnership have created a stunning, understated glass centrepiece for the new restaurant at London’s Royal Academy of Arts, owned by restaurateur, Oliver Peyton of Peyton & Byrne.

The striking glass Unibox showcases stand proudly in the centre of the artist-inspired dining area, housing an extraordinary selection of sculptures and busts dating back to 1897, which had previously been kept out of view in the Royal Academy’s storage rooms. Comprising over 20 glass cubes of varying sizes, framed in chic black matt aluminium, the showcases themselves have a sculptural quality. Their quirky and bold design makes the display a stunning feature, which puts the sculptures centre stage and acts as a focal point for diners, extending their museum experience.

The restaurant’s interior, including the Unibox centrepiece, is designed to reflect the Royal Academy’s ideals and history, whilst simultaneously complementing the existing elements of Burlington House, which features murals, wood panelling, and marble, brass and velvet fabrics.

Commenting on the project, Tom Dixon said: “As usual we had a big idea, a tight purse and a short deadline – which is always a tricky proposition. But, once again, Unibox came to the rescue with a mixture of creative thinking and some modification to the standard Unibox system. We were able to house, display and protect the priceless sculpture in record time and bang on budget.”

Unibox managing director, Nick Wraith, comments: “Having worked with Tom Dixon and his team on the design and fit out of his London shop last year, I knew that the Royal Academy of Arts restaurant project would be just as unique and exciting. The collaboration gives us the opportunity to really stretch what we can do in terms of thinking outside the box and coming up with new, impressive display concepts.
