GE POWER - 10 Months To Go – London 2012 Is Already A Winning
Showcase For GE
GE equipment and technology is featuring in every Olympic Park venue at next
year’s London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Advanced energy systems, high tech lighting, uninterruptible power supplies,
state of the art healthcare imaging equipment and electric car charging points
are among the GE innovations being showcased at next summer’s 30th Olympiad in
an estimated 75 GE Olympic Games projects.
GE’s London 2012 presence follows on from GE’s strong engagement at recent Games
such as Vancouver and Beijing.
GE London 2012 General Manager Tony Gale commented; “London is a great venue and
London 2012 will be a fantastic Olympic Games. For GE, it is an outstanding
opportunity to showcase some of our emerging new technologies, most particularly
in areas such as energy management and healthcare.”
“At GE we are also one of LOCOG’s 2012 Sustainability Partners and this theme is
reflected in many of our technology installations such as LED lighting in venues
including the Olympic Stadium and the electric vehicle infrastructure project in
which GE is a partner.”
GE main projects at London 2012 include:
London 2012 Olympic Stadium - GE Lighting is supplying around 14,000 lamps to be
used in the back-of house function areas of the Olympic Stadium and GE Digital
Energy’s Uninterruptible Power Suppliers (UPS) will allow continuation in the
event of power failure and support the emergency lighting system.
Olympic Park Energy Centre – GE Energy has delivered Jenbacher cogeneration
equipment which will provide power heating and cooling across the Olympic Park
and Stratford City sites for Games time and legacy.
Electric vehicle charging – the Mayor of London Boris Johnson has announced a
network of charge points planned to support the Olympic zero emission electric
vehicle fleet. After the Games, the charge points will boost the Mayor’s growing
Source London electric network. GE will be providing a significant number of
charge points with power supply provided by EDF Energy for the London 2012 fleet
of 200 BMW and Mini electric vehicles.
Olympic Village Polyclinic – GE Healthcare is supplying a wide range of digital
imaging equipment to the Olympic Village Polyclinic to treat athletes during the
Olympic Games include MRI, CT, X-Ray and ultrasound which will diagnosis the
smallest strain or sprain to provide athletes and coaching teams with vital
information for competition. GE Healthcare is also supplying 150 heart
defibrillators to the healthcare services providing mobile cover to spectators
at the London 2012 Olympic Games and many test events.
Velodrome (Track Cycling Venue) - GE Digital Energy’s Uninterruptible Power
Supplies will allow continuation of the event and support the emergency lighting
system. GE electrical distribution equipment has also been supplied to the
venue. GE Uninterruptible Power Suppliers are also being used at test events
across a number of venues including Wimbledon (Tennis), Lee Valley White Water
Centre (Canoeing), Horse Guards parade (Beach Volleyball), Greenwich Park
(Equestrian) and Eton Dorney (Rowing and Canoe Sprint).
Handball Arena and Basketball Arena - GE Lighting has designed, supplied and
commissioned HDTV broadcast lighting for both the handball and basketball arena
locations.
As well as Olympic Park sites GE is also providing equipment to many of the
other non-Olympic park Olympic Games venues including for the equestrian
competition at Greenwich Park where it is supplying ultrasound systems for the
monitoring and treatment for horses in the competition.
GE is also working with the City of London, EDF Energy and the Mayor’s office on
the installation of a state-of-the-art energy efficient lighting system on Tower
Bridge. As well as reducing the iconic bridge’s carbon footprint and energy
costs, the initiative will significantly enhance the bridge’s architectural
features at night.
