DOW BUILDING SOLUTIONS - STYROFOAM Business Celebrates Westfield’s Opening

Dow, Official Worldwide Olympic Partner, had its own reasons for celebrating the Westfield Shopping Centre’s recent official opening - in a huge coup for the business, 70,000m2 of 140mm thick ROOFMATE SL-A STYROFOAM insulation was specified for several roofs in the mammoth complex, and a further 25,000m2 of 140mm FLOORMATE 500-A was installed in its car parks.

Westfield Stratford City – which neighbours the London 2012 Olympic Park – is the largest urban shopping centre in Europe, with more than 300 shops, over 50 restaurants and a 17-screen 3D cinema. It boasts the UK’s largest casino, three hotels and a bus station, as well 100,000m2 of office space.

Given its location, it’s estimated that 70% of the 10 million ticket holders attending next year’s London 2012 Olympic Games will pass through the Westfield site, putting it even more firmly on the map.

The win led to a busy period for Dow Building Solutions – alongside the Westfield development over 12,000m2 ROOFMATE SL-A was being installed next door in the London 2012 Olympic Games’ Media Centre, and a further 30,000m2 in the Athletes’ Village. ROOFMATE SL-A also has pride of place in the Olympic Stadium.

“A project of this nature obviously requires a materials supplier who can offer reliability, timely and accurate logistics support and the necessary scale of operations to be able to provide consistent, quality product on a large scale,” said Roofing Manager Richard Powell.

“Not only could we demonstrate that STYROFOAM-A products have the thermal efficiency, durability, strength and moisture resistance required, we could also offer supply from our UK manufacturing base in King’s Lynn as well as ‘buffer stocks’ through our distributor, SIG, in order to prevent product running low at critical times.”

Given the size of the project, multiple contractors were involved, and Dow Building Solutions worked throughout the construction period on ongoing liaison with distributor SIG and roofing specialists BriggsAmasco, Knight Asphalte and Rock.

“We believe several key drivers won us the Westfield contracts, including our quick response times and the reputation we’ve built for effective technical support and reliability, which was vital to the success of this project,” added Richard.

STYROFOAM-A products are proving popular with building designers looking for materials that help support energy efficiency targets. The A-foam range takes CO2 from industry and uses it as a blowing agent to create foam with a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of less than five.
