DULUX TRADE Paint Is The Firm Favourite For British Rally World Champion’s Workshop

Former British & World Rally Champion, Phil Mills, has called upon the assistance of Dulux Trade to help kit out the new workshop for his specialist car company, Viking Motorsports. A range of high performance Dulux Trade products was used to revamp the workshop to a professional standard, including Dulux Trade Vinyl Silk, Dulux Trade Undercoat and Dulux Trade High Gloss.

Viking Motorsports specialises in the build and preparation of high quality Group 4 Mark 2 Ford Escorts and is the fulfilment of a lifetime ambition for the 2003 World Rally Co-driving Champion, Phil Mills, who established the company in 2008. With the company going from strength to strength, Phil decided to relocate to a larger space to meet increased customer demand.

The move to a larger workshop presented the ideal opportunity to revamp the new space to bring it in line with the company’s image. Phil was keen to work with Dulux Trade, following the paint brand’s involvement in the MSA British Rally Championship where it is the 2010/2011 proud title sponsor of the series. As such, Phil sought advice from the paint experts at Dulux Trade to recommend a number of suitable products that would help achieve a durable, high quality finish for the high traffic workshop.

After completing a site visit to the Viking Motorsport workshop, located in Powys, Wales, Colin Seddon, Business Development Manager for Dulux Trade, developed a detailed specification for the project and provided guidance on the most suitable products for the busy environment. Colin explains: “The aim of the project was to refurbish the building, but most importantly, achieve a high standard of finish that will look immaculate for years to come. With this in mind, I specified a range of high performance and durable Dulux Trade products that would enhance the appearance of the workshop and deliver a robust finish to protect the workshop’s interior.
“Phil also wanted a colour scheme that drew inspiration from the Viking Motorsport’s logo, which comprises striking shades of blue, red and grey. Taking this into consideration, I was able to suggest a similar colour palette to complement the design.”

Local decorator, Nigel Mantle, was tasked with transforming the interior of the 5,000 square foot workshop, which includes a fully equipped fabrication shop, and workshops to prepare and finish the cars. Nigel Mantle explains: “Dulux Trade Vinyl Silk in Magnolia was applied to the majority of the walls in the workshop to create a clean and presentable image. The top quality emulsion provides excellent coverage and opacity; it glided onto the walls with ease and transformed the workshop into a bright airy place.”

For trim areas, such as door frames and skirting boards, Dulux Trade Aluminium Wood Primer was applied to prepare the surface ready for painting. Then two coats of Dulux Trade Undercoat were applied, followed by one coat of Dulux Trade High Gloss in Poppy, a vibrant red, or Copenhagen Blue to achieve a colourful, durable finish. Nigel Mantle continues: “The existing paint was quite dark but the combination of Dulux Trade Gloss and Undercoat worked fantastically to cover it up. The undercoat gave great depth and the gloss flowed on beautifully.”

To transform the floors, Dulux Trade High Performance Floor Paint was used in Tideway, a striking grey shade, and Poppy to match the colours of the Viking Motorsports logo. The two pack water-based formulation produces an extremely hardwearing finish, so was ideal for the workshop floor, which experiences heavy loads from cars and machinery.

Commenting on the impressive finish, Phil Mills, owner of Viking Motorsports, said: “The workshop looks fantastic. The colours work really well together and have transformed the workshop into a bright, professional environment to work. What’s more, the high performance products will ensure the building remains pristine for many years.
