FLÄKT WOODS – Fans Of Westfield Shopping Centre
 Restrictions in site access meant a helicopter was used by Fläkt Woods as an
aerial crane to carry some of their car park jet fans on-site as part of a
gigantic three contract fan package for the recently opened Westfield Stratford
City shopping centre in East London.
Westfield Stratford City is the largest urban shopping centre in Europe. The 1.9
million sq ft retail and leisure destination is located at the gateway to the
site of the 2012 London Olympics.
Working in partnership with E&S on the car park contract, Fläkt Woods engineers
installed 150 of their jet fans. These have been prefabricated off-site and come
complete as plug and play units with controls and a strict noise deadening
acoustic design.
They are supplied as a skid mounted units, saving time on site installation and
allowing for testing before installation. To ensure that smoke doesn’t breakout
from the skid assemblies all fans are contained within fire rated enclosures
manufactured by E&S using their advantaged flame shield ducting which is also
included throughout the car park.
Providing ventilation for both day-to-day pollution and emergency smoke, the
fans use a CO and LPG sensor monitoring system, so that selected fans only run
when necessary. Additional savings are gained because the main extract fans do
not need to be oversized to cope with the system resistances found in ducted
systems.
Fläkt Woods’s engineers calculated that installation time was halved thanks to
the fans pre-fabricated construction, the equipment was packed into a minimum
footprint and all components are accessible from the front for ease of
servicing.
Under a separate contract on the project, working for FCS Ductwork, Fläkt Woods
supplied smoke extract fans for the shops and mall areas. A range of the
Company’s bifurcated JM high temperature fans were installed, as these are
ideally suited for exhausting hot air up to temperatures of 600°C. All fans have
non overloading characteristics.
A third contract at Westfield Stratford City was awarded to the Company to
supply and install smoke extraction and ventilation fans plus controls for the
walkways throughout the Centre. These fans were part of a package of products
supplied for Waagner-Biro.
