SIEMENS - Ansell & Bailey & Siemens Make Award Winning Team

The Ecology Centre at Wellacre Academy in Flixton can now boast an award win, thanks to the work of Manchester-based architects Ansell & Bailey and engineering experts Siemens.

Ansell & Bailey was presented with the Overall National Green Champion Award 2011 for the Built Environment at the Green Apple Awards and joined on stage by close working partner and associate winner Siemens.

The Green Apple Awards were launched in 2000 and have become recognised as one of the major award schemes highlighting environmental endeavour in the building sector around the world.

The award was won for Ansell & Bailey and Siemens’ pioneering work on Wellacre Academy’s new Ecology Centre which is a sustainable education facility for use by students and the community. The centre features three state-of-the-art glass bio-domes, each of which has its own micro-climate and can be used for cultivating plants and observing their progress. A series of sensors closely monitors the atmosphere and a computer system records this data for analysis by students.

With proven expertise in education, Ansell & Bailey were responsible for the design of the centre and Siemens supplied and developed the entire control system which enables precision monitoring of the Ecology Centre. As a consequence of this new development, Wellacre will lead the Land-Based and Environment Diploma in Trafford from September 2011 which gives students the opportunity to explore the relationship between humans and the environment.

Charles Shorland, senior partner of Ansell & Bailey, commented: “We are delighted to have won the prestigious Overall Award for such an innovative and exciting project, which will allow the students and the wider community to appreciate and learn about ecology. From Siemens, Gary Molden, applications specialist and Paul Diggle, business development executive, managed the project. Gary said: “We’re a very proud team here at Siemens to be recognised in the prestigious Green Apple Awards. The Ecology Centre at Wellacre Academy is a pioneering educational facility and it’s been a real joy to be a part of its construction.”

The Awards were presented by Trevor Baylis OBE, the inventor of the wind-up radio at The Boardroom, University of Westminster.
