ADVANCED AIR EPIC Fan Coil For NR20 Applications

The Advanced Air EPIC Fan Coil Unit incorporates a unique fan deck with a single horizontally mounted fan and motor. The fan and motor is much larger than those used in conventional fan coils and consequently runs at a much lower speed. With this lower speed fan comes the benefit of lower noise levels, and on the University of West of Scotland an amazing NR20 was achieved in the studios.

The fan coil was also able to achieve NR25 with a conventional ceiling but to get down to NR20 it would require a ceiling with a higher sound reduction index or alternatively install the unit outside the room, for example in the ceiling void in the corridor.

The fan coil was tested in a mock-up built in the Advanced Air R & D facility. The challenging aspect of this new product development was obviously meeting this very low and demanding noise criteria which was made all the more difficult since chilled beam water temperatures of 14/17 also had to be utilised.

Within the design of the system care had to be taken to minimise any noise regeneration from the fan coil configuration, downstream ducting, plenum boxes and air diffusers. Advanced Air supplied the components for the system which included EPIC fan coils, plenum boxes and swirl diffusers, and oversaw the system design and testing.

The project was completed in September 2011, the consultant was ACTS and mechanical services contractor Crown House Engineering.
