BILCO UK - Contemporary Craftsmanship On Show In New Gallery

Total access solutions provider Bilco UK (www.bilcouk.com) has supplied vital equipment to provide access and improve safety at the new Turner Contemporary art gallery in Margate, Kent.

The £17.5 million seafront gallery was inspired by JMW Turner, one of Britain’s most famous painters, and has been built on the site of a guesthouse where the artist often stayed.

The equipment supplied by Bilco included a special application floor access door which was manufactured and delivered to the contractor within one week of the customer advising that the original specifications were incorrect.

“The deadline was quite tight,” said James Fisher, Bilco UK/Europe general manager. “As soon as we heard they needed a different size door we did everything we could to get the replacement to them as quickly as possible. We managed to build and deliver the JD-AL special size, custom-made floor access door they needed within the week.”

The rapid turnaround was appreciated by the contractor, R Durtnell & Sons, one of Britain’s oldest building companies with a reputation for quality work, craftsmanship and business integrity.

Bilco floor doors provide reliable access to equipment stored underground or between floors. They are ideal for warehouses, commercial and other industrial premises, office buildings, hotels, schools and hospitals where easy and safe floor access is essential.

JD-AL doors can be manufactured to virtually any size to suit specific customer requirements. Large doors such as those supplied to the Turner gallery are designed to allow one person to operate them.

The doors have stainless steel hardware and compression spring operators for easy use.

Funded by Kent County Council, Arts Council England and the National Lottery, the gallery features historic and contemporary exhibitions as well as educational and cultural events.

Raised on a plinth to prevent flooding, the two-storey building has six mono-pitched roofs that provide light into all the upper level galleries.

James Fisher added: “This is another example of the company’s ability to be flexible and adaptable to provide appropriate solutions to sometimes unusual requirements. Bilco is delighted to have been involved with the construction of this impressive building.”
