BUILDING SIMULATION - Thermography–Seeing the Benefits

Always looking to improve on its customer service, Building Simulation has enhanced its skill base to now include thermographic surveys to assist with the identification and support of energy saving strategies.

Thermal imaging can be used to identify heat loss due to poor insulation or excessive infiltration but perhaps less known is that thermal imaging can identify heat loss due to damp, water ingress and incorrect installation – particularly of high performance glazing.

A skilled and qualified thermographer can correctly interpret the colour images in just the same way that a skilled medical practitioner can interpret an X-ray. A skilled thermographer will be able to hone in on the issues which have the greatest impact on comfort and energy costs.

Combining thermal imaging with computer simulation not only identifies hidden factors which could jeopardise energy saving targets but increases the accuracy of energy saving predictions.

Catherine Simpson, Director of Building Simulation said “Whilst thermography is still relatively new to me, I can interpret the images by drawing on my twenty five years’ experience with computer simulation. It is so exciting, the thermal camera allows you to see what you suspected but could not prove.”
