STO LTD - A Tranquil Setting For Sainsbury Laboratory

Stanton Williams Architects specified Sto Ltd’s seamless acoustic ceilings in the ‘street’ circulation area at the Sainsbury Laboratory research centre. The 11,000 sq.m Sainsbury Laboratory is situated in the University of Cambridge’s Botanic Garden.

StoSilent Top was chosen to minimise noise levels. It helped to create the ideal environment for research and scientific advances. StoSilent Top achieves an average acoustic performance of 0.56 NRC – 0.60 αW (250-2000 Hz).

Stanton Williams explains: ‘We selected StoSilent Top for its plaster-like finish to create a monolithic and seamless surface rather than a tiled ceiling.’ Ultimately, the Sto product was specified for its unique aesthetic finishes to complement this attractive communal space.

The smooth ultra-fine finish produced a crisp contemporary design to create a stimulating and attractive environment for learning and collaboration.

The Gatsby Foundation funded Sainsbury Laboratory will consist of laboratories, support areas, meeting spaces, café and seminar rooms. The research centre will accommodate over 120 scientists specialising in the development of plant science. Work began on the project in February 2008 and reached completion in December 2010, in time for the formal opening earlier this year.
