FORMICA GROUP Continues To Support Designers Of The Future
 Formica Group is delighted to announce the winners of the Design Event MART 2011
awards. For work in materials this year's "Most innovative use of Materials"
award won by Hannah Wales was sponsored by Formica Group continuing their
support of up and coming designers of the future.
MART is a curated selling exhibition showcasing the best in contemporary design
from the North of England. Since it began in 2005 Design Event MART has been
held at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead and has acted as a
centre-point of the Design Event Festival. The event was established to support
designers, especially those at the mid-early stages of their careers.
The materials award category was judged by Neil Sookee, Design Director for
Europe and Asia, Formica Group. "We’re proud to be sponsors and part of such a
prestigious scheme for contemporary designers in the North of England. Formica
Group and MART share a common goal - to encourage the next generation of
creative talent. Supporting emerging design talent is an integral part of the
history of Formica Group and we are pleased to be part of this initiative which
builds on our previous work in this area." comments Neil.
Hannah Wales is a Furniture and Product Design graduate from Northumbria
University. Her designs seek to discover concepts and ideas that are a result of
hands on exploration of materials and processes. “I find that innovation comes
from fully understanding and appreciating the materials and processes being
utilised," comments Hannah. "Silli Mugs were the result of an exploration into
the ways in which surface finish can both visually and physically enhance an
object. The intention was to explore beyond the fundamentals of finishing
processes and material finishes, looking at the semantics of surface finishes.”
