PRATER Had Formula One India Covered With Grandstand Roof Construction

The recent launch of the Indian Grand Prix race circuit (Sunday 30th October) was a key milestone for Prater who constructed the impressive grandstand roof overlooking the 5.14km long track designed by the German architects Tilke GmbH & Co. KG - Engineers and Architects.

Working with Indian based infrastructure company, Tristar, Prater's involvement on site commenced in May this year - the first formal joint venture project between the two parties - the company installed 53,000 sq m of Kalzip standing seam sheets. These were rolled on-site, to the roof and soffit areas - some 40m in the air - to create the curved finish of the 'wave form' roof.

"The installation did not come without its challenges," said Richard Unwin, operations director at Prater. "Due to the height we were working at we had 40m long mechanically driven cradle systems suspended from the roof structure some 42m in the air, allowing us safe access to the soffits and enabling the contractor to progress the stands beneath unhindered.'

"We were also managing tight deadlines due to weather constraints as the monsoon season begins in July. To compensate, our team of 50 operatives put in double shifts, day and night, to get the roof installed and provide shelter for the trades below so that the programme was not compromised."

Joachim Mallman, Project Manager at Tilke Architects, said: "Prater's innovative cradle solution to the soffit area enabled the challenging wave form roof to be realised. They worked quickly and efficiently and seeing the design brought to life was very impressive."

Prater's ongoing relationship with Tristar will provide essential on-the-ground knowledge, helping to build the company's profile in the Indian market and supporting the company's geographical expansion plans for 2012.

Richard continued: "The joint venture with Tristar is testament to our commitment to building on our parent company Lindner's existing presence overseas.

"Securing such a high profile project at the outset has put us on the front foot especially as we were able to demonstrate our ability to get the job done despite all the constraints. I can't deny that I was filled with pride when I saw the impressive end result being shown to millions of TV viewers during the opening race."
