WINDHAGER - Care Home Cuts Heating Bills In Half

Praesmohr House residential care home for the elderly in Aboyne Aberdeenshire, is set to cut its heating bills in half and achieve carbon savings of 53.7 tonnes per annum by transferring from oil to biomass heating with Windhager.

The heating was originally running off a 1956 coal boiler that was converted into a diesel oil firing burner with an efficiency of little more than 35% - consuming up to 100 litres of oil a day, costing as much as 79 pence/litre. By converting to Windhager biomass heating, the care home is now saving some £6,830 per annum in heating costs and at a 90% efficiency rate. Indeed total energy costs have been cut by 60% through better insulation and lighting as well as heating.

To fulfil the heating demand of the care home, MCS approved installer, Deeside Eco Heat was invited by the Energy Saving Trust Scotland via tender to design, specify and install an efficient biomass heater, at which they were successful. They provided a detailed quotation and scheme design of a renewable system utilising a Windhager wood pellet cascade boiler system with a payback time of seven years.

Praesmohr House is eligible for the government’s recently launched Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI), which helps to off-set the capital cost of the boiler and provides an income to the business in the long term based on the level of heat energy produced.

Two of Windhager’s BioWIN Excel 35kW wood pellet boilers were installed into an outer building to provide a 70kW cascade system with eight suction pellet probes with a change over unit and bulk pellet hopper, the first installation of its kind in the UK.

During the winter period both boilers will come on whereas in the spring and summer the boilers will alternate, ensuring that not just one boiler is doing all the work. Wood pellets were chosen as the fuel that would provide the greatest efficiency, reduced running costs and carbon savings.

Hot water is provided to the care home by Windhager’s AquaWIN, a 575-litre stainless steel hot water cylinder, combining constant hot water convenience with total efficiency fed from the BioWIN Excel cascade system.

The high output BioWIN Excel is available in outputs of 35kW, 45kW and 60kW and is available in a cascade version up to 180kW, making it the ideal heating solution for large buildings, hotels, schools, public buildings, apartment blocks and district heating systems. The BioWIN Excel is also available as a pre-packaged plant room for a total turn key solution for an energy efficient renewable heating solution.

The BioWIN Excel has a number of features to reduce system maintenance and increase levels of comfort and efficiency including a fully automatic patented ash-sliding grate under the burner running in opposite directions about every six hours to ensure a clean burner bowl. The burner grate fully opens to allow larger pieces of residue left from combustion to be reliably removed for long and continuous burner operation as ash is removed at the same time as pellets are drawn into the burner.

Extensively tried and tested, BioWIN Excel’s pellet heating technology has been adapted especially for high performance, focusing on maximum operational safety, fuel efficiency and economic operation for cost savings.

BioWIN Excel uses a new, patented fully automatic pellet feed suction system not used on any other boiler system in the world. The flexible system uses up to eight extraction points within the bulk pellet hopper, making the system incredibly reliable and space saving as pellet storage rooms incorporating inclined surfaces are no longer required.
