LAFARGE AGGREGATES & CONCRETE UK - New Bridleway Opens Up Countryside Views

RIDERS and walkers are enjoying fresh views of the Hertfordshire countryside thanks to the creation of a new bridleway.

The route, constructed by Lafarge Aggregates & Concrete UK, provides a link around the perimeter of Tyttenhanger Quarry towards the Watling Chase Trail, a popular 11 mile track through the Watling Chase Community Forests from Borehamwood to St Albans.

It offers an alternative path of around 1.5 miles for people using the trail, opening up new areas of countryside and offering views of fields and woodland.

John Usher, Hertfordshire County Councillor, who did the honours with a ribbon cutting ceremony to open the bridleway, said:

“This part of Hertfordshire is well known for its horse riding community. I feel sure they will be delighted with the opening of this new bridleway, which will provide a very pleasant and safe area for them to ride out.”

Starting south of the M25 the route runs via a tunnel under the motorway then skirts Tyttenhanger Quarry, winds past local tourist attraction Willows Farm before travelling on to end close to Coursers Road at Colney Heath.

Cooperation between various groups including Lafarge, the Tyttenhanger Estate, British Horse Society, Hertfordshire County Council, Hertsmere Greenways Group and local ramblers led to the creation of the route.

Lara Evans, southern planning and estates officer for Lafarge, said:

“We are delighted the bridleway is now open for the public to use and enjoy.
“It means more opportunities for local people to get out and about in the beautiful Hertfordshire countryside.
“Lafarge seeks to be a good neighbour to its surrounding communities and we were happy to provide this new leisure track which we hope many people will take great pleasure from for many years to come.”

Work on the bridleway took place in two stages with the final element carried out by Lafarge using local contractors.

The construction was not without its challenges and innovations.

One steep section posed particular problems, requiring major vegetation clearance and considerable regrading and drainage works to prevent rainfall washing away the surface.
