SANDTEX TRADE’S High Achievement At La Corbière Lighthouse

Sandtex Trade’s high performance exterior coating X-treme X-posure™ continues a rich tradition of providing premium protection for lighthouses across the UK with a major project in Jersey, where the system has been introduced to restore the traditional white livery of La Corbière Lighthouse.

At 135 feet above sea level and with a tower height of 63 feet, La Corbière Lighthouse is one of the most distinctive landmarks in the Channel Islands, popular with tourists for its panoramic views and stunning sunsets.

Far more than a tourist attraction, the lighthouse has served as an important navigational point for more than 135 years, and the gleaming white tower and the lantern, visible from up to eighteen miles away, have helped to guide tens of thousands of vessels safely around Jersey’s headland and towards the port of St Helier.

La Corbière Lighthouse is also of historical interest as it was the very first structure of its type to be built entirely from reinforced concrete rather than traditional stone blockwork.

Free of the chinks and fissures which inevitably occur in buildings constructed from interlocking stone blocks, the smooth rendered elevations of the lighthouse have resisted erosion extremely well since construction was completed in 1874.

The condition of the lighthouse is also a testimony to the way the building has been maintained throughout its life and to the protective power of paint which has provided much needed protection against crashing waves, continuous sea-spray and punishing winter gales.

Today the responsibility for the upkeep of the lighthouse lies with the States of Jersey Harbours Department and maintenance work is carried out by the Transport and Technical Services (TTS). This year, the entire building was scheduled for redecoration as part of its long term maintenance regime - and Sandtex Trade X-treme X-posure™ was specified for the first time, because of the long-term weather protection offered by the superior durable, smooth masonry paint, and the product’s British Board of Agrément Certificate for up to 15 years’ protection.

The choice of Sandtex Trade X-treme X-posure™ was new, and so was the way in which TTS chose to apply the paint. Rather than having scaffolding all around the entire lighthouse as in the past, a minimal amount of scaffolding was erected at the top of the building from which specially trained members of the Site Services team could abseil down the side.
Over the course of six weeks, the abseilers applied a maintenance coat of Sandtex Trade X-treme X-posure™ to the structure’s entire rendered exterior area, to provide much needed protection from the elements.

The innovative approach of using abseilers instead of installing full scale scaffolding saved the States of Jersey several thousands of pounds. It also meant that La Corbière Lighthouse could continue to perform its navigational functions throughout the summer months as its visibility did not have to be obscured.
