CEMBRIT - Devon Roof Goes Green With Alpina
Cembrit’s Alpina slates have been used for a unique bespoke property in theEast
Devon countryside. The high-quality grey/green Alpina Slates were used on the
intricate new build project to provide a durable long-lasting roofing material
that protects against harsh coastal weather, while complementing the muted
natural colours that surround the house.
Located in the small coastal town of Budleigh Salterton, and set amid farmland
and woodland, the home is a dream come true for owner, Brian Shorney, following
an 18 year battle for planning permission. The four bedroom detached house is
split over three levels and features stunning views over the sea. Designed by
Jeremy Rawlings, best known for his magnificent period properties, the
construction had to take into consideration several planning conditions as it
was on a conservation site. The use of harmonising colours brings the entire
building together with its surroundings and achieves a balanced and attractive
finish. The roof was a complex and intricate matter featuring six elevations and
two curved areas and local builder Simon Cox, needing a specialist roofing
contractor, selected Glen Newcombe to perform the huge task of installing the
new roof.
“This was a multifaceted roofing project,” explains Brian Shorney, the property
owner. “It features six shallow elevations and two curved areas. Initially it
proved difficult to find a roofer willing to undertake the challenge. Glen came
along and undertook the task with great enthusiasm together with Andy Sterrick
who installed the zinc. Cembrit provided a great amount of support throughout
the installation, including a prior site inspection to advise best actions, as
well as a further visit to explain the technical issues and discuss the
obstacles involved. We knew we wanted a green/grey coloured slate, and being in
a coastal town we also wanted a high quality product that would last against the
intense weather conditions. Cembrit’s Alpina slates fitted perfectly with local
authority needs, as well as our own, and proved a cost effective material. I was
most impressed and grateful for Cembrit’s high-level of customer service, and
the outcome of the roof is superb.”
Alpina is a Brazilian natural slate, selected from the finest deposits and
produced at some of the best facilities inPapagaios,Brazil. It is available in
two colours: grey green and graphite and in a variety of sizes. With its flat
surface and pleasing shade variations, Alpina slate can be relied upon to create
an attractive and long lasting roof.
Alpina slate has virtually no unstable minerals such as pyrites, graphite,
carbon and un-oxidised irons and will withstand the most severe weather
conditions: they are unaffected by sunlight, ultraviolet light and even acid
rain. Laid correctly Alpina slate will last the lifetime of a building and are
ideal for use on any type of project.
Using skills built up over 80 years, Cembrit offers a wide range of cladding
