DANFOSS HEAT PUMPS Installed To Protect Social Housing Tenants
Against Rising Energy Prices
Ground source heat pumps from Danfoss Heat Pumps UK have been specified for a
£5m new-build social housing development at Upton near Pontefract.
The pumps have been installed at two semi-detached properties which have
achieved Level 6 of the Code for Sustainable Homes. They form part of the
49-home School Lane development on a brownfield site which has been built by
Yorkshire Housing, one of the county’s largest social housing providers, in
partnership with Wakefield Metropolitan District Council and the Homes and
Communities Agency.
Environmental sustainability and energy efficiency are key priorities for these
new homes and each property will incorporate renewable technologies, such as
solar roof tiles, and heat recovery systems. The homes with heat pumps will be
among 34 available for social rent, with the other properties offered for
purchase through shared ownership.
Ged Walsh, Business and Development Director at Yorkshire Housing, said: “At
Yorkshire Housing we aim to deliver modern and environmentally-friendly homes to
the people who need them most. We are always looking for reliable and
sustainable products in the market that will have a real cost benefit for our
tenants and improve the efficiencies of our homes.
“By using Danfoss’ heat pumps and a number of other sustainable technologies, we
can reduce the impact on the environment and our tenants will benefit directly
from reduced heating and electricity bills.”
Main contractors Mansell had worked with Danfoss Heat Pumps UK on a recent
social housing project in Rotherham and recommended the company to its client.
Mansell Senior Quantity Surveyor Steve Seedhouse, explains: “We were impressed
by the technical support we have received when we worked before with Danfoss
Heat Pumps UK. The installation was very successful there, so we were confident
about recommending their heat pumps on this project too.”
After carefully assessing the properties’ energy needs, Danfoss Heat Pumps UK
specified its 6Kw DHP-H Opti-Pro pumps with integral 180 litre water tanks to
provide space and water heating.
The heat pumps are each supplied by a 90m ground loop buried in a vertical
borehole in the back garden, which extracts heat from the ground. They will
maintain a continuous supply of domestic hot water, as well as supplying an
underfloor heating system on the ground floor and radiators on the first floor.
Ground source heat pumps work by circulating a refrigerant fluid around a
circuit containing four elements: evaporator heat exchanger, compressor,
condenser heat exchanger and expansion valve. Heat absorbed from the ground is
transferred to the liquid refrigerant which evaporates to form a gas. This gas
is then compressed which causes its temperature to rise. The hot gas passes into
the condenser where it starts to change back to a liquid as heat is transferred
into the building. After passing through the expansion valve, the liquid
refrigerant returns to the evaporator and the cycle begins again.
The DHP-H Opti Pro pump is one of the most advanced on the market and
incorporates an intelligent control system on the circulation pumps to ensure
maximum efficiency.
Chris Dale, Director of Danfoss Heat Pumps UK, explains: “An increasing number
of social housing providers are investing in heat pumps both to reduce carbon
emissions and to provide their tenants with a means of low cost heating. This is
preventing them from falling into fuel poverty due to the impact of rising
energy prices.”
