Nearly 1,500 sqm of Kalzip’s cost-effective Falzinc
foldable aluminium building material has been installed by
All Metal Roofing on the walls and roof of The Arthaus, a
unique development of stylish apartments and mixed use
commercial floor space located in the chic new boutique area
of Hackney. Designed by Lynas Architecture, this new build /
renovation project was built for Findon Homes by Sheldon
Construction Services.
“Falzinc is a lightweight, robust and malleable aluminium
material that’s easy to handle and quick to install by
carefully forming into traditional raised seams. It’s also a
very strong and durable building material that has the
attractive and highly distinctive external appearance of
pre-weathered zinc which mellows gracefully over time,
thereby providing end users with the best of both metals,”
says All Metal Roofing’s Peter Flood.
Having gained BBA Certification for Falzinc (Certificate No
08/4571) some years ago, it is proving to be an increasingly
popular, low maintenance, robust and sustainable external
building material alternative to zinc. Falzinc is
manufactured using a core of corrosion-resistant aluminium
alloy that is electroplated on both sides with a thin layer
of zinc and phosphate treated - a unique PEGAL process
patented by Kalzip.
With a life expectancy of at least 40 years (even under the
most adverse environmental conditions), Falzinc is installed
by hand-crafting the material into raised seam sheets,
panels, flashings and trims. It is ideal for use on
virtually any fully supported traditional and contemporary
roofing, façade and soffit applications where a mature zinc
appearance is desired. Falzinc’s raised seams can be
specified to run horizontally, vertically and diagonally and
the material’s flexibility also allows it to be skilfully
laid to a smooth curve, offering architects tremendous scope
for renovation projects and endless creative design
possibilities for new build applications.
Planning permission for the demolition of the original
Victorian brick-built property known as 199-205 Richmond
Road was granted subject to the building’s main façade being
retained, restored and incorporated into the design of the
impressive new development. Now known as The Arthaus, this
new property featured well at the prestigious What House?
2011 Awards held recently in London, winning a Best Mixed
Use Development award.
Located between London Fields and the City, The Arthaus
comprises a variety of more than 70 residential units
ranging in size from stylish studio flats to 4 bedroomed
luxury apartments. The Arthaus also has over 3,000 sqm of
commercial floor space including office accommodation
together with an entertainment room, communal roof terrace,
large atrium roof and boasts the unique addition of a modern
art gallery at its centre.
Falzinc is supplied by weight to specialist approved
contractors in 600mm and 670mm width coils in material
thicknesses of 0.7mm and 1.0 mm and is also available in
flat sheet form in lengths of up to 3 metres.
