Air Conditioning - Climate Control - Heating Products - Ventilation Products
Carrier, the world’s leader in high technology heating,
ventilation, air-conditioning and refrigeration (HVACR)
solutions, a part of UTC Climate, Controls & Security and a
unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX), recently
hosted a seminar on sustainability in supermarket
refrigeration for representatives from a variety of major
supermarket and restaurant chains and a number of
independent consultancy firms at the historic Central Hall
in Westminster.
The seminar examined the current status of commercial
refrigeration with respect to climate protection and
environmental sustainability, and looked closely at the
impact of increasingly stringent European legislation and
regulation on the future viability of conventional HFC
refrigerants. A number of Global Warming Potential (GWP)
taxes and charge limitations have already been introduced
throughout Europe, whilst UK government policy in this area
is still emerging.
Carrier views carbon dioxide (CO2)as the clear leader in the
field of sustainable, future-proof refrigerants. CO2 is a
natural substance which, with a GWP of just 1 (as compared
to 3,780 for R404a), is not subject to any GWP-based taxes
or charge limitations. CO2 has an excellent volumetric
efficiency and is seen as the best-in-class refrigerant for
heat recovery. Carrier have spent significant time and
resources on developing CO2 refrigeration systems,
culminating in their current range of CO2OLtecTM CO2
refrigeration systems, which can achieve impressive energy
savings when compared to conventional systems.
Carrier CO2OLtec Systems
The Carrier CO2OLtec product portfolio comprises a full
range of factory built CO2 plant, which can fully satisfy
the refrigeration needs of customers for both large- and
small-scale operations.
In addition to refrigeration, Carrier also detailed their
CO2OLheatTM heating system, which is a modular add-on
heating system that operates side-by-side with Carrier CO2
racks in order to provide store heating. Intelligent
controls and the inclusion of water side pumps within the
CO2OLheat unit mean that the refrigeration and heating
systems work together dynamically in order to achieve
maximum energy efficiency and an attractive return on
investment.
Carrier has more than 230 refrigeration systems currently in
operation in Europe, accounting for more than 40 MW of
installed MT refrigeration capacity. Carrier has a number of
key installations in the UK, ranging from discount to large
supermarket formats, and plans to establish a Retail
Distribution Centre transcritical CO2 system in early 2012.
