First to release alternative to SBEM
IES Limited, the world leading provider of building
performance software, is proud to announce that its
flexible alternative to SBEM launched on Monday 15th
May. IES VE Compliance has now passed all of the tests
required and will imminently receive formal approval by
the Department for Communities and Local Government
(formerly ODPM). Its established thermal simulation tool
called ApacheSim, has been developed to offer a more
accurate and comprehensive route for assessing
compliance with Part L2 2006.
Using the Approved Calculation Methodology, IES’s VE
Compliance tool offers increased flexibility over SBEM,
especially for more complex buildings. It assesses
compliance by estimating the building carbon emissions
for different elements of the building separately and
then adds them together to get the final result. This
increased flexibility yields more design options and
also allows elements such as bulk airflow, natural and
mixed mode ventilation, self-shading and shading from
adjacent buildings to be considered.
Aimed at architects, service engineers, house builders
and all those within the building design process tasked
with ensuring compliance, the IES VE Compliance offers a
number of commercial benefits. Building designs can be
assessed for compliance and alternative energy-saving
strategies compared, quickly and easily, right from the
earliest stages of the design process through to
planning submission. In addition, the results files
produced detailing all the calculations are suitable for
inclusion in submissions to Building Control
authorities, helping to streamline the approvals
process. These files are laid out in a clear, logical
way and are indexed with hyperlinks, so each calculation
is cross referenced to relevant sections of the official
documents.
Also, the fact that it is part of the IES Virtual
Environment suite and uses the IES Integrated Data Model
(IDM) means that data input is a simple process and
visual models are produced, while the building can also
be easily assessed using other tools within the Virtual
Environment suite. Much of the data required, such as
geometry, glazing areas and U-Values are assigned as the
IDM is created and updated as design changes are made,
allowing the easy testing of designs at multiple stages
without the need to re-input data.
Dr. Don McLean the Founder and Managing Director of IES
says: “As the only company of our kind with a division
dedicated solely to the UK building regulations, IES
really provides a complete Part L 2006 solution,
offering software, consultancy services, customer
support and training. We are confident that we are
bringing to market the most comprehensive, flexible and
easy to use solution.”
The IES VE Compliance will be included in IES’s complete
one-stop 2006 Part L software bundles for testing
compliance both for Part L1 and Part L2. These will also
incorporate SAP 2005 and SBEM within the IES Virtual
Environment and will be available to purchase on either
WAN, LAN or stand alone licences.
