Toshiba and Carrier equipment air-conditions cross Channel ferries

Toshiba’s latest R410A digital inverter controlled Split system air conditioning has been retrofitted on the bridges of two of the P&O Ferry fleet out of Dover. This new air conditioning installation was carried out by Richardson Marine Refrigeration of Rochester and adds to work that they have done on all four P&O ‘Pride’ ships previously using Carrier fixed speed Split systems. The Toshiba and Carrier systems have been supplied by the Swanley branch of HRP - the wholesale distributor for these brands.

Two Toshiba 12 kW cooling/14 kW heating ceiling cassette units cover the requirements of the recently extended bridges on the Pride of Dover and the Pride of Calais. Structural ‘wing’ extensions have been added to further enclose navigation equipment on the two bridges and this has considerably expanded the glazed area – increasing the extremes of hot and cold that these relatively large exposed areas are now subject to. The resulting larger bridges required air conditioning.

The inverter control of the Toshiba Split systems provides just the right level of automatically adjusted comfort at all times. Working conditions have been optimised for the vital personnel who operate the ship. The Toshiba units were a particularly attractive option as long pipe runs are inevitable from the high bridge to the outdoor units, which have been installed in sheltered positions on the deck below. Installation was a very specialised procedure given the unique materials, configuration and regulations of the marine environment.

Elsewhere on the ship the vessel’s basic chilled water ring main has been supplemented by additional Carrier fixed speed Split systems. Carrier high wall units have been installed in the
on-board Banking offices and in the Satellite Navigation equipment cabin.
