Pilot project paves way for Drylining Trainees

Ten budding drylining installers recently completed an intensive 12 week training course, emerging with a recognised qualification and all the skills needed for a successful career. The trainees were part of a pilot programme to address the growing need for skilled workers. The course was run by drylining manufacturer Knauf Drywall and CITB Construction Skills on behalf of the Federation of Plastering and Drylining Contractors (FPDC).

James Leaning, Technical Services Manager at Knauf Drywall, says drylining is one of several building trades with an insufficient intake of new people. This is despite excellent career prospects with the increasing use of drylining – and forecasts of strong growth in building and construction.

Aged 16 to 32, the trainees had very little experience of drylining products and systems before the course. Representing five drywall contractors, they were selected as good candidates for the drylining industry. They underwent extensive practical and theoretical training at the Knauf Drywall Training Centre at Sittingbourne, Kent. The course also provided hands-on experience on an active building site and additional training at the Norfolk campus of the National Construction College.

“At the end of the course, the trainees were assessed on their construction of sample walls which included everyday challenges such as windows and doorways,” says James Leaning. “Considering their low level of skill at the start of the course, the work they produced for assessment was of a very high standard.” Candidates were rewarded with an NVQ Level 2 in drylining fixing or finishing – equipping them well for work in the industry.

The pilot programme at Knauf Drywall, together with other training initiatives in the drylining industry, is seen as the start of an essential education drive. “If drylining is to attract and retain enough quality
workers, the industry must provide good opportunities,” says James Leaning. “Good training
empowers people to turn opportunity into benefit.”

Knauf Drywall manufactures a full range of plasters, plasterboards, insulating laminates, drywall accessories, metal sections and steel building systems for domestic and commercial applications, from factories at Sittingbourne in Kent and Immingham on Humberside.
