Conservation range of facing bricks
Reclaimed bricks are renowned for their aesthetic
appeal and unique appearance. However they also have
inherent problems to match these qualities. They are
often difficult to obtain, expensive and of poor quality
which do not meet any testing standards of the modern
day. As such, the NHBC do not recommend them for use in
new buildings or homes.
Supplies at best are unreliable and can cause great
problems if extra bricks are required to complete a
project. They do, however, provide the size, colours and
textures to blend with old Victorian buildings that have
so much character and charm. The effect of weathering
over the centuries means that it is difficult to obtain
the blends required to match the existing.
We have developed a range of Imperial Handmade
Conservation Bricks to meet this demand whilst allowing
for peace of mind as regard to quality, supply and
availability to meet modern building regulations. All
this is achieved whilst remaining economical and
offering the widest choice of colours and meet most
brick matching requirements. There are many reproduction
reclaim bricks available but these are normally
manufactured to metric sizes of 215x65mm. Size does
matter, when bonding in with existing brickwork and
therefore we offer our range in nominal dimensions of
225x68mm to meet the meet the old imperial sizes. As
these are of a nominal nature actual measurements may
vary from brick to brick, just as they were produced in
the past.
Variety of colour is of great importance and we have
worked closely with our manufacturing unit to develop
the range on offer.
These currently exist of Yellow Multi Clamp Stock
Bricks, Red Clamp Stock Bricks and London Yellow
Sandstock Bricks. These three basic brick types give you
much more than you might imagine, due to our unique
production methods.
Firstly, Yellow Multi Clamp Stock Bricks provide a
subtle blend of Yellows/Buffs, Reds/Pinks, Greys/Blacks.
These blend together to give an excellent alternative to
a reclaimed mixed yellow brick.
Secondly, Red Clamp Stock Bricks offer a unique mixture
of Red/Orange with some darker flashing but with a
weathering effect on one stretcher face only. As the
bricks are deemed to have two stretcher faces, it is
possible to either select a true weathered reclaimed
appearance with some whites and black weathering. With
just white weathering, with just black weathering or
just a plain red mixture. This can be achieved by
“spinning” the bricks and allows you and your clients
the choice of four different types from just one brick
type! You can therefore keep stock levels low but be
able to meet any requirement.
Thirdly, London Yellow Sandstock Bricks provide a true
London yellow reclaim type of brick, with colours
ranging from Yellow shades which incorporate Orange/Pink
flashing, some burnt carbon to faces and again the
unique weathering effect. As with the Red Clamp, this
weathering is only on one stretcher and with “spinning”
a choice of effects are available. Giving four different
shades of brick from just one brick type.
These bricks are of a handmade format with differing
degrees of a light creasing texture, giving the natural
traditional effect of times gone by with natural
character. They have been through the freeze/thaw tests
to meet current European Standards and although no
British Standards apply as regards the dimensional
specification of the bricks, we can advise on the
suitability of each brick type for renovation work or
new build projects.
Naturally, the bricks have a very varied and multi
colouring effect and as such are very difficult to
sample in the normal way. Therefore, we have taken great
care in producing photographs to use for sampling
purposes. You will see from the brochure the extent of
the variety of colour and it would require approximately
30 bricks each time to provide a true sample of these
truly unique and wonderful bricks. As with all
photography of natural products some colour variation
may apply but we have ensured that we are able to give a
fair representation. We would point out the types of
mortars used where photographed and stress that mortar
colour will effect the appearance of the bricks. It is
recommended that work be carried out mixing the bricks
from 3 or 4 packs at a time to avoid banding. Where this
is not possible it is advised that care is taken when
laying the bricks to ensure that the correct mix is
obtained from a single pack.
For the benefit of your yard sales, we would recommend
that some bricks be allowed to be in contact with the
elements from an early stage after delivery. During
particularly dry periods it would be advisable to dampen
down some bricks to allow the natural colours to show
through.
We trust you will appreciate the great benefits our
Conservation Range offers you; we believe they are the
most attractive and economical alternative to genuine
reclaimed bricks. We also believe this range offers the
widest choice available within the market sector. We are
committed to maintaining this standard and are happy to
discuss any special mixes you may require for individual
projects.
For those able to take the bricks into stock a load can
be made up of any colours mixed together on one load. Or
they can be delivered in conjunction of a load made up
of any of the other products associated with Ransfords.
