Irrigation systems for green roofs

Access Irrigation, one on the country's longest established irrigation companies, have produced a free guide entitled the 'Access Irrigation guide to Green Roofs'. With the growing popularity of green roofs, partly because of their environmental benefits, this guide provides important background information on the need to ensure adequate irrigation for the green roof system.

The guide looks at the different options available for watering both intensive and extensive green roofs, including popular sedum roof systems. Irrigation is vital for all green roof areas during the establishment phase and during dry spells. In addition irrigation can add fertiliser to the roof area to ensure an adequate nutrient balance. The guide provides information on the most appropriate types of drip and sprinkler systems available, as well as control systems and compliance with the water regulations.

Irrigation systems can either be operated using mains water or by capturing and storing rainwater from the roof itself. Rainwater harvesting ensures that irrigation can take place even during hosepipe bans and drought orders.
