British Gypsum helps Jon to rebuild his life

When architectural designer Jon Rowell decided to leave the rat-race and move himself and his wife from city centre Nottingham to the wilds of the Lincolnshire Fens, he was looking to more than just rebuild his life – he took on the challenge of almost single-handedly rebuilding an old Methodist Chapel.

For Jon, who had started life as a painter and decorator before retraining in architecture, his latest challenge meant learning a whole raft of new hands-on skills – and his first stop was therefore the British Gypsum Drywall Academy training centre at East Leake, in Leicestershire.
With support from British Gypsum’s local Project Specification Manager, Matthew Sexton, who visited the chapel to advise on lining specifications, Jon visited the centre, one of the leading drywall training facilities in the UK. He learnt at first hand how to install the latest British Gypsum lining products and systems, including GypLyner UNIVERSAL metal frame lining system and GypFrame RB1 Resilient Bars.
His new skills will be put to work when Jon starts to line the brickwork and ceilings of the old chapel building, which are both in poor condition. He also picked up some tips on fixing Gyproc ThermaLine thermal lining boards, which he will use to line external walls to upgrade the thermal performance.

The project, which is being filmed for a Channel 5 documentary “Build a new life by the seaside” due to be screened later this year, will be divided into three phases, building a new accommodation block adjacent to the chapel, refurbishing the original building and then linking the two with a new glazed structure.

His visit to the Drywall Academy gave Jon a glimpse of how the chapel will look when the work is complete - in the meantime, however, he and his wife are living on site in a caravan.
