Celebrating the past, present and future of CIOB site management
education and training
This year the CIOB is celebrating the 30th
anniversary of its Site Management Education and
Training Scheme (SMETS).
The SMETS programme covers the Level 4 Certificate and
Diploma in Site Management. These qualifications assist
employers in satisfying regulatory health and safety and
other EU legislation. The course consists of 14 modules
and includes project planning, organising and resourcing
projects, health and safety and contractual and legal
responsibilities. On gaining the Level 4 Diploma
candidates have access to Associate Membership of the
CIOB (ACIOB).
To date over 10 000 candidates have completed the
programmes within the scheme and this success is
attributed to ensuring the content remains aligned with
industry requirements. Nick Marsh, CIOB Education
Manager commented: "The CIOB acknowledges that regular
evaluation of its qualifications is key to their success
in the marketplace. Flexible modes of study are required
by site managers and in response the CIOB is investing
in ways to meet these needs including distance
learning."
To celebrate this landmark year a formal luncheon was
held recently at Englemere for those who have been
involved with the programmes over the years. Guest
speakers Rt Hon Nick Raynsford MP, Professor Roger
Flanagan, CIOB Senior Vice President and Dr John Trill,
Chair of the SMETS working group each extolled the
benefits of a fully educated and trained industry.
Professor Roger Flanagan said: "The anniversary marks
thirty years of success in CIOB site management training
and the feedback over the years endorses the benefits of
training to the individual and the person’s workplace."
Local celebratory events are being planned throughout
the country and a new awards scheme is shortly to be
launched.
