Managed protocol - the third way
Fire detection and alarm systems require protocols to
operate; protocol is the ‘language’ used by electrical
components in order to communicate with one another.
This allows a smoke alarm, interface or other device to
speak to the system’s control panels. Generally there
were only perceived to be two types of protocol - ‘open’
and ‘closed’, both having their benefits and drawbacks -
until now…
An ‘open’ system comprises various components from
various manufacturers. This, although allowing more
variation in the choice of components available, suffers
in that there is no set standard by which to operate,
and the full functionality of the fire security
components within the system cannot be exploited. In
addition, this mix of suppliers can cause confusion over
the on-going maintenance of the total system.
‘Closed’ systems benefit from having a common
manufacturer and therefore a dedicated protocol and
resulting complete functionality. This increases system
reliability but also offers entirely different problems,
in that with only one supplier, the option for customer
selection of maintenance, upgrade and installation is
removed. This results in customers being locked-in and
denied the opportunity to shop around.
Gent however offers a third option – offering the best
of both worlds; Gent calls it a ‘managed’ protocol
system.
Using Gent components provides unparalleled efficiency
within the system, with a single point of contact for
all manufacturing issues and queries, as you would
expect in a ‘closed’ system. And, as the protocol used
is designed for the products within the system, not only
is Gent quality to be expected, but also total system
functionality, as the designers intended - a feature
unavailable in open systems.
In addition to this, Gent’s ‘third way’ takes full
advantage of the Gent 24 Network, a body of 50 Gent
trained, approved and monitored System Integrators, all
of whom can professionally supply, install, service and
commission the Gent system. This uniquely gives the
customer the benefits of both ‘open’ and ‘closed’
protocols by still allowing them the freedom to make
their own choice of system provider from the Gent 24
network. This allows competitive pricing and delivery,
without sacrificing the customers’ confidence in the
quality of Gent products and services available.
