Thurston Building Systems Lowers first student accommodation unit into place at Askham Bryan Collage part of £5 million contract

A £5m project to provide state of the art accommodation for students at Askham Bryan College near York will get underway this week as the first “pods” are craned into position.

The project comprises three accommodation centres – three blocks each of three storeys – made up of individual units or pods ie the accommodation has been constructed off site and will be lowered into position as complete units, designed and manufactured by Thurston Building Systems.

Steve Hodges, Divisional Projects Director for Thurston, has been working closely with the college, he said: “We are pleased to be working with Askham Bryan College, which is recognised as one of the foremost providers of land-based further and higher education in the North of England. This has been a major project for the Thurston Group and we are delighted to see the first of the accommodation centres arriving on site.”

Situated at the heart of the campus, the all steel framework means the 189 en-suite rooms are virtually sound proof and have been completed to a high specification. The accommodation also includes accommodation for wardens and nine accessible rooms for students with physical disabilities. The centre replaces existing accommodation which was demolished earlier this year.

Askham Bryan College has some 700 full time students of which approximately a third are resident on site. The first of the new buildings will be completed by September for the beginning of the academic year and the scheme is scheduled for completion by April 2007.

Principal, Professor Gareth Rees said: “This is an important and exciting day for the College. It is the largest single building project in our history and means we will have a high standard of accommodation to match the high standards of teaching. Year on year we are seeing the number of students growing, and this trend seems set to continue, particularly at Higher Education level.”

He added: “One of the long term benefits of the pod system is that it significantly reduces heating and lighting costs as well as providing high quality facilities.” The contractors are Thurston Building Systems which has its headquarters in Wakefield.
