Sports & Recreation Centre is at the heart of University of Kent’s Canterbury campus
The Sports & Recreation Centre is at the heart of the University of Kent’s Canterbury campus and operates a sport-for-all policy to encourage everyone to keep fit and healthy.

As part of the University’s commitment to extend the services on offer to its students and the local community, the University has invested a further £1.5m in a new synthetic pitch complex.

The complex includes a full size 3rd Generation Grass Football Pitch, and a full size football/hockey pitch both floodlit by Abacus Lighting. In addition, the investment includes refurbished tennis and netball courts (which now includes two recreational basketball rings), a beach volleyball pitch and spectator seating.

Both floodlit pitches utilised Abacus new flat glass Challenger 1 floodlight, a high performance floodlight with double asymmetric beam distribution ensuring zero upward light, tight control of overspill and minimal glare to onlookers. To ensure ease of maintenance, the tried and trusted HL250 base hinged raising and lowering mast was specified. The HL250 uses a hydraulic counterbalance which attaches to the base of the mast and safely lowers the mast to ground level providing hassle free maintenance.

The complex was officially ‘opened’ by Neale Cooper, Manager of Gillingham FC, at a well attended event on the 2nd October. The new pitches have already proved to be extremely popular, with over 1000 public users on the pitches in the first week after the £1.5 million development was completed. Mike Wilkins, the Sports Centre's Director of Sport, said ‘The facilities are now some of the best in the country and it really is tremendous to see so many people from the local community using them.’
