First for Thurston with Greenwich Family Learning Centre
Thurston Building Systems is pleased to announce the
completion of the Family Learning Facility at Ealdham
Primary School on behalf of Greenwich Council.
A first for the local council, the family learning
centre has an IT classroom for parents to improve their
computing skills and an arts and crafts room for pottery
and painting, and the family learning centre is already
proving to be a welcome addition to the school and local
community. The Surespan single storey building is
adjacent to the school garden and includes a brand new
crèche and parents’ room, with nappy changing
facilities, and toilets with facilities for people with
disabilities.
The school is one of the first in the area to adopt
extended days for community use and is already proving
to be a welcome addition to the area. The garden
community project, will see parents and children working
together to cultivate their own vegetable garden and
will provide a successful educational and community
activity.
Thurston Building Systems completed the building process
in ten-weeks at a cost of £200,000, comprising 24 m x
8.4 m, the brick clad and tiled roof unit offers a cost
effective alternative to traditional construction
methods.
Brian Woodham, Thurston Business Development Manager
working on the project said: “Although this isn’t an
unusual project from the building point of view, its end
use is quite new and innovative. The council should be
commended for providing something that is having a
genuine positive impact upon the local community.”
The Surespan product has complete design flexibility to
suit the needs of the client and can go as high as three
storeys with virtually unlimited floor space. Equally,
the exterior rendering can be changed to suit its local
environment and the Thurston product range has a
certificated life expectancy of 60 years.
Due to the flexible nature of the product base, Thurston
is able to deliver low-cost accommodation solutions,
from security storage, to fully serviced and functional
classrooms, at a fraction of the time and cost of
traditional building.
