Levitt Bernstein uses Autodesk AutoCAD Revit Series as the move
to building information modelling gathers momentum
A recognition of the potential of building
information modelling (BIM) has led the London-based
architectural practice, Levitt Bernstein, to invest in
22 seats of Autodesk AutoCAD Revit Series – Building (Revit
Series).
The firm had been just about to buy a different product
when a last-minute demonstration of Revit Series by
Autodesk reseller partner Cadassist convinced them to
reconsider. “We were keen to move towards BIM as we
believe it holds the key to even more creative but also
efficient work,” says Dylan Murdey-Green, architect and
IT manager.
“However, we were on the lookout for a very robust but
easy-to-use system. Even though I have used ArchiCAD in
the past, once I saw Revit Series, I knew it was a
serious contender.”
Revit Series combines the building information system
Revit Building with the latest version of AutoCAD. This
means that Levitt Bernstein can continue to work in a
familiar AutoCAD environment, making a planned and
gradual migration to BIM as projects and personnel
allow.
BIM is the creation and use of co-ordinated, consistent
and computable information about a building project.
Because this information is always totally current and
readily available it is invaluable for design
decision-making, the production of high-quality
construction documents, predicting performance,
cost-estimating and construction planning and,
eventually, for managing and operating the facility.
Levitt Bernstein has now begun to test Revit Series on a
large mixed tenure housing project for London’s South
Bank, creating a single cohesive and co-ordinated 3D
model holding all current data and drawings.
“I purposely chose a project where I knew the director
would be objective,” says Murdey-Green. “However,
although it’s still too early to measure results, the
feedback has been that Revit Series is performing even
better than expected.
“It’s been easy to learn and is enjoyable to use – in
fact, the team is enthusiastic about the new software
and the sceptics have been won over. Now others are
volunteering to try it on their projects.”
“Architects want to design and any software that gives
them the freedom to realise their ideas without any
complications wins their vote,” says Peter Williams of
Cadassist. “Through its ease of use and the automatic
co-ordinating of design and documentation, Revit Series
gives them this freedom.
“Levitt Bernstein has got off to an excellent start and
will soon see swift returns on their investment.”
