Harlequin’s guide will help architects specify dance floors

With a growing interest in the provision of spaces suitable for dance, there is increasing focus towards specifying dance floors that both meet performance aspirations and conform to health and safety requirements. A paper presented at ‘The Theatre Engineering and Architecture Conference’ in June by Bob Dagger - Managing Director of leading dance floor specialists, British Harlequin - discussed some of the factors that should be taken into account.

British Harlequin plc has now published a useful guide for architects. Up to now there has been a lack of specific information available to architects asked to design dance and drama spaces. Commercial sports floors have completely different characteristics to proper sprung dance floors and the wide spectrum of dance disciplines requires not only a variety of different dance surfaces, but also of sprung systems. Harlequin's useful new publication, ‘Specifying Dance Floors. A Guide for Architects’, has been written specifically with architects in mind. It details the differences between the sprung floors in Harlequin's range; gives test results and specifications, together with case studies of a variety of installations worldwide. Dancers need to have confidence in the floor in order to perform without fear of slipping or falling and the Guide explains the importance of purpose-designed sprung dance floors, not only in enhancing performance, but also in helping to protect against the hazards of long term injuries from hard, unyielding floors.
