Dricon Fire Retardant saves Scarborough’s Peasholm Pagoda

Confidence in the performance of Dricon, Arch Timber Protection’s fire retardant treatment for timber, was well founded when it saved the iconic Pagoda in Scarborough’s Peasholm Park following an attempt by vandals to burn it down for a second time.

On arrival at the site, contractors to Scarborough Borough Council found evidence to indicate that a bonfire was started deliberately on the lower deck of the pagoda using a mixture of non fire retardant treated timbers from the site supply, petrol from the concrete mixer and 16 ornate decorative timber brackets. The spread of the fire was limited to 75% of the lower deck flooring and supporting joists as a result of the Dricon fire retardant treatment. The timbers were supplied to Castleford based Arch for impregnation with Dricon, which remains the only BBA Certified fire retardant treatment. They were then returned to site in readiness for the completion of the Pagoda.

Graham Price, the Council’s Head of Property Services said: “Luckily the structure is still intact, mainly because of the fire retardant treated timber used in its construction. If this material had not been used, the entire Pagoda, with construction costs of over £200,000, could have been destroyed.

However, the whole of the lower deck floor section will need to be reconstructed, the protection of the steel work will need replacing, and 16 new decorative brackets will need to be made. It is very depressing that the despicable acts of a small minority can have such an impact, and it means that the restoration project will not be completed until the middle of November.”

Initial insurance estimates are indicating that the replacement of the burnt timber and smoke damage will be less than 1% of the construction costs which further reinforces the value of the Dricon treatment.

Richard Adams, Fire Retardants Manager for Arch commented: “Whilst no one wishes to see acts of wanton vandalism of this type, it is pleasing to report that Dricon performed as expected, self extinguishing with sufficient speed to even negate the need for
attendance by the Fire and Rescue Services. It really demonstrates what level of protection can be achieved through a quality impregnation treatment.

We have also just received the results of an ongoing 21 year test of Dricon and the retention of its fire retardant properties. They are very positive and demonstrate that it will be protecting the Pagoda to the same standard for at least another two decades.”
