Compact and powerful – Educated opinion chooses LED technology

Existalite’s LED1000 white LED emergency light source has been used in the main academic building at The University of Lincoln’s Brayford campus.

The refurbishment of the University’s first signature building needed to keep the modern and minimalist tone internally and maintain the building’s stunning night-time appearance. To avoid costly and time-consuming alterations to the building’s concrete structure, Siteco Lighting Limited, the sole lighting design and manufacturer to the project, decided to combine the normal and emergency lighting luminaires into one new integrated continuous suspended system.

Existalite’s unique LED1000 system was chosen because the LED head units could be fixed unobtrusively between the main luminaires, yet still provided the required level of emergency lighting at floor level. The choice of LED, matched with advanced constant current LED drive modules, enabled “open area” and “escape route” spacing's of 5.4 and 7.9 metres respectively, at a ceiling height of 2.5 metres. The system was supplied with an advanced two cell Nickel Cadmium battery stick which has a minimum four years service life, when installed in compliance with EN 60598 2-22.

The LED1000 comprises a flexible range of head units that are connected to a LED drive module. At Lincoln, this module was sited invisibly within the linear extrusion of the Quadrature system. The LED1000 includes SureTEST, a diagnostic self-test system that will continuously monitor the various emergency lighting functions, plus conduct automatic monthly functional tests and annual full duration tests, in accordance with BS 5266 and prIEC 62034.
