Formica® Laminate is the choice for New School Cafeteria Facility

Award-winning international architect’s practice, interior and branding design company, SHH, selected to use Formica® High Pressure Laminate (HPL) in the creation of a new zoned cafeteria, for The Acland Burghley School in North London. The result is a contemporary and practical solution which utilises to great effect Formica HPL from the ‘Plain Colours’ range, screen-printed in black with specially-commissioned artwork.

The Formica laminate has been used on ‘feature’ walls in the cafeteria which has also integrated IT facilities, and is known as ‘The Hub’. The selected screen printed images, combined with the vivid tones of the ‘Plain Colours’ laminate, are key to identifying and sub-branding the different areas.

The new cafeteria layout caters for pupils who want to dine quickly, and also to those who want a relaxed environment in which to eat and socialise. The area is zoned according to user needs: a snack zone, a diner zone, a bar zone, an Internet zone and a 250 sqm outdoor zone.

These five distinct zones are further announced by separate furniture, flooring and lighting treatments. SHH selected Formica Limited’s Velour surface finish for the laminate in these areas, choosing the following striking colours; Malibu, Mouse, Spectrum Yellow, Beaujolais, Clementine and Tricia.

In such a high-traffic and high-impact environment, SHH believed the best solution to create feature walls and joinery was to use Formica laminate as it is so durable. SHH also commented that as ‘The Collection’ from Formica Limited offered “a fantastic choice of colours, it was the logical solution to create our design.”

Consulting with a pupil focus group, the design brief was to answer a number of functional space-planning problems as well as improving the area aesthetically for the pupils. The project began life as a concept design exercise undertaken at the invitation of the ‘joinedupdesignforschools’ initiative, run by the Sorrell Foundation. SHH has realised the brief very successfully, and ‘The Hub’ recently received a ‘Commended’ in the Design Week Awards 2006, Hospitality Environments category; and was a finalist at the Retail and Property Design Awards 2006.
