Gent’s S-Quad is top of the class

Linden Lodge special needs school in London has been extensively refurbished; the challenge - to provide a modern and highly effective fire alarm system that did not needlessly distress the children, many of whom are easily upset by alarm sounds. Gent’s Elite System Integrator, Multifire, came to the rescue with specially recorded voice messages as part of the Gent S-Quad sensor and S-Cubed alarm sounder range powered by Vigilon analogue addressable fire panels. The benefit that this flexible system provides is excellent fire detection, while minimising disruption for staff and children. Additionally, fewer fire panels were necessary compared with other company’s proposed fire alarm systems, and the system is easy to maintain.

The extension of the Gent Vigilon system provided a comprehensive site wide fire detection system, which even exceeded the demands of the local Fire and Rescue Service. The addition of custom voice messages delivered through the unique S-Quad sensors and S-Cubed sounders was viewed as an alternative alarm function far less likely to upset or unsettle the children and that enables a site-wide fire and voice evacuation strategy synchronised between the existing site and the new extension.

One of the major advantages of using the S-Quad sensors with their advanced dual angle sensing technology is that they minimise the incidence of false alarms. This is particularly key in a school environment where both adults and children may ignore the alarm if there have been too many false activations. Additionally in this instance, too many false alarms would further distress sensitive children.

Alongside the S-Quad sensors, Multifire also installed Gent S-Cubed alarm devices, which provide a combination of strobe (giving visual warning), speech and sounder functions. Each S-Cubed has very low power consumption, allowing many more sounders to be installed on a single Gent analogue addressable loop. This translates into fewer fire panels being required compared with other systems in the marketplace. Finally, the sounder strobe functions in both the S-Quad and the S-Cubed ensure that the school complies fully with the alarm requirements of Part III of the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA).

The Linden Lodge School operator and staff are delighted with what has been achieved, and the pupils have benefited greatly from the improved facilities.
