Striking the Balance

‘Striking the Balance’, the most recent in the series of CPD seminars from Gent by Honeywell, is aimed at improving the quality of fire detection and alarm systems installed today.

Gent believes in taking responsibility for delivering the best possible solutions for the protection of life and property from fire. It considers this should not only include the manufacturer, but everyone involved in the process of providing a system, including the design, installation, commissioning and final ongoing service.

Gent’s latest seminar looks at how false alarms can be reduced without compromising the ability of the system to detect real fires quickly. This has become increasingly more important in the light of new fire legislation and specifically the Integrated Risk Management Plans (IRMP) published by the new regional Fire Authorities. These plans suggest that if the ratio of false alarms from a specific site is high, then the site risks a reduction in the level of response from the Fire and Rescue Service.

Some of the common problems that cause false alarms are investigated, as well as what the British Standards and fire trade associations say on the subject. It examines how predicting the type of fire and selecting the best sensor for particular applications is key to eliminating false alarms. In addition, it considers combinations of the how intelligence in the control panel combined with the latest sophisticated multi-sensor technology can improve the accuracy of the system’s response.

Insurance companies are particularly concerned over the new Fire Authorities policy towards response levels and turnout time periods. Owner-occupiers may well see this impact in their insurance premiums, which may rise in relation to Fire Service response levels, directly tied to the level of false alarms in the building.
