Special ballet wagon for Amsterdam's Het Muziek Theater

Het Muziek Theater in Amsterdam has recently taken delivery of a Harlequin sprung floor, built onto a new mobile ballet wagon that can be stored vertically when the theatre is not staging dance.

Because Het Muziektheater is the theatre of residence for Het Nationale Ballet (the Dutch National Ballet), De Nederlandse Opera (The Netherlands Opera), and Gastprogrammering (the guest programming organisation of Het Muziektheater which invites companies and productions from around the world), there is a need to remove and set out the dance floor easily to cater for a variety of requirements. Het Muziektheater is also the home base for the Holland Symfonia. The problem facing technical director Dirk Bakker was the old ballet wagon required extensive manpower and time to assemble.

The Harlequin Liberty sprung panels already in use at the Het Muziek Theater had proved popular with the dancers, so the preferred option was to find a means to build them into a new mobile wagon that could be hung vertically into the fly tower but without removing panels when not in use. The idea that led to the eventual solution was prompted by Dirk being impressed with a Hoac aluminium system used by one of the guest touring companies. Harlequin worked in conjunction with Hoac to develop and supply a new type of mobile ballet wagon.

The final assembly of the ballet wagon was planned for a five-day period during the theatre’s annual closure for maintenance. Fully assembled the ballet wagon is 13.5m x 16.2m with height, including the dance floor, of just 180mm and with a load capacity of 250Kg/m2. A total of 176 castors allows the wagon to be moved smoothly. The wagon is composed of two main sections, each sub divides to allow the floor to be raised or lowered from horizontal into the vertical storage position without flexing. Sections are linked together with pin joints along the centre line and can be manually separated or closed by means of a cranked self-locking worm gear system. A pair of 3-ton hoists is then used to raise or lower the floor.

Aside from the key benefit of being able to store the entire floor vertically in the fly tower, another unique aspect is the use of a linear driven bearing device mounted directly onto the aluminium frame. This patented system was specially developed by Hoac to guarantee a positive connection when the ballet wagon is stored vertically and following a 90-degree rotation when being lowered for use. It also ensures the Harlequin Liberty sprung floor performs exactly as intended.
