Metal Ceiling Solution from SAS Int. Specified for DLR London City Airport Station

The refurbishment and extension of the existing station at concourse levels on the Docklands Light Railway in Silvertown, due to the expansion of London City Airport, required a creative approach from architects and designers Weston Williamson. SAS metal ceiling tiles were chosen as they could provide a robust, high quality solution in this demanding environment, and would also be in keeping with the clean lines and modern, sleek look of the design.

A solid, square edge tile was specified and chamfered so it could be easily accessed without sustaining damage. A clip-in system was also chosen rather than a regular approach, so the tiles would stay secured and again be less prone to damage when accessed for maintenance. Recessed circular downlighters were fixed into the panels to provide illumination.

Geoff Bee, Project Director at Weston Williamson said:
“We chose SAS International’s solution because we liked the product and knew it would perform well in this environment. Coating the tiles both sides meant that they would easily withstand moisture, and being exposed to debris that could occur in this particular situation.”

Plank (linear) fittings were also chosen for the corridor areas and bespoke curved tiles, and C-profile tiles for the staff areas, along with bulkheads from SAS to provide a versatile means of linking the ceilings to the other building elements.

The site itself was unusual in that it featured a viaduct to cross, and this meant that the concrete structure would have its underside exposed. Rather than leave it this way, Weston Williamson decided to create a feeling of an ‘internal/external’ space and use the tiles to clad the space.

This 50m x 20m area is visually very striking and Weston Williamson feel the SAS solutions work well and are very much in keeping with the overall appearance of the station development. They are planning to use a similar approach in their next station project.
