Daikin Third Generation VRVIII Has Many New And Innovative
Features
Daikin Europe N.V. has announced the introduction of
a third generation of its much acclaimed VRV range of
air conditioning systems with the extensively re
engineered and RoHS compliant VRVIII. Available
initially in heat pump and cooling only versions, VRVIII
incorporates all the best features of earlier VRV
systems. However, it also possesses a considerable
number of new design, installation and maintenance
refinements, particularly as regards capacity,
performance and refrigerant leakage control.
Many new design features
First and foremost, system capacity is 12.5% greater at
5 – 54HP (cooling only 5 --18HP), enabling up to 64
indoor units to be connected to a single heat pump
system – an increase of 33%. Furthermore, total system
piping length is increased from 300m to 1,000m and
vertical separation between outdoor and indoor units
from 50m to 90m. Additional flexibility is found in the
distance from the first refrigerant branch. Here the
longest length minus the shortest length from that first
branch cannot be greater than 40m. The longest piping
length after the first branch however, can be 90m
maximum. VRVIII therefore, represents the ideal air
conditioning solution for large and multi storey
buildings.
The new system allows far more flexibility in unit
combinations since, with the exception of the 5HP model,
any size unit can be combined with any other size unit.
Users therefore, are able to select combinations to
match their own requirements precisely – such as high
COP or minimum footprint installations. Moreover, VRVIII
offers up to 200% overall increase in unit connection
ratio for a single outdoor system. For a double system
the connection ratio is 160% and for a triple outdoor
unit system the connection ratio remains 130%. Also,
whereas VRVII 10HP units for example, could only be
connected to 16 indoor units, the same capacity VRVIII
unit can connect with 25 indoor units. This facility
allows cooling to be switched from one side of a
building to the other to combat localised heat gains
caused by morning or afternoon sunshine.
Overall performance is also substantially enhanced, due
primarily to refinements to the system’s purpose
designed inverter driven, improved high efficiency ‘G’
type scroll compressor, which operates at a higher speed
and reduces the losses due to higher speeds by 2%.
Friction losses are also reduced by virtue of its high
thrust mechanism, which generates improved efficiency
and lower operating noise. Furthermore, the innovative
method of supplying oil to the scroll by means of
differential pressure improves lubrication and unit
reliability. Developments such as these enable VRVIII to
return maximum COPs at full load of 3.80 in cooling mode
and 4.17 in heating mode.
The use of dual high output DC motor driven fans,
complete with specially designed low pressure loss fan
guards and super efficient triple wall heat exchanger,
provides 10%(max) greater airflow with no increase in
operating noise. The application of airflow analysis to
these fans has optimised their casing compatibility,
reduced pressure losses and an increase in external
static pressure from 58.8Pa to 78.4Pa. Outdoor unit
footprint is less than earlier similar capacity VRVII
models but ducting height remains the same despite the
new system’s higher capacities.
The incorporation of an upgraded low noise compressor
reduces operating sound by 5dB with a further 3dB
reduction due to a 200% increase in sound insulation.
This ensures year round quiet operation and at night
during which operating noise can be reduced in 2 steps
to 50dBA and then 45dBA and also at transitional
periods. Furthermore, the supply of power to the
inverter is cut off when indoor units are shut down by
remote control, resulting in a reduction in standby
power consumption of about 30%.
Improved reduced refrigerant leakage control
An important environmental and installation feature
inherent in VRVIII is the ability to control the amount
of additional refrigerant charging during commissioning.
Pressing the ‘start’ button on a printed circuit board
within the outdoor unit casing after connecting the
refrigerant cylinder to the charging port, initiates
charging, which ceases automatically once the
appropriate volume of refrigerant has been transferred.
Automatic testing of wiring, shut off valves, sensors
and refrigerant volume is activated during charging by
pressing the ‘test operation’ button on the same circuit
board.
Leakage prevention is further supported by the use of
brazed joints in place of flanged and flared connections
before the shut off valves and also by brazed pressure
sensors and electronic pressure gauges instead of
sensors and gauge ports.
Installation and maintenance features VRVIII
installation is simplified by the absence of oil
equalising piping on installations of 2 or more modules
– this reduces field piping time and piping insulation.
Piping installation is also made easier and more
reliable by brazed connections in the liquid and gas
shut off valves. Raising the position of the power
supply terminal panel in the electrical cupboard box,
which is waist high and accessible from the front panel,
provides more working space for installers.
VRVIII is supported by a full range of indoor units
comprising 2 and 4 way blow ceiling cassettes, special
600 x 600mm low noise multi flow cassettes, ceiling
mounted corner, built in ducted, ceiling suspended, wall
mounted, floor standing and concealed floor standing
models.
Compatible with the complete Daikin suite of advanced
air conditioning monitoring and control systems
(Intelligent Touch Controller, Intelligent Manager,
BACnet Gateway and LONWorks Compatible Gateway), the new
VRVIII offers high energy saving, precisely controlled
and monitored air conditioning solutions for all medium
to large sized commercial building projects.
